Start it, open drawing from the system tray or a hotkey, mark the screen, then exit drawing with its exit control or Escape. It works with a mouse, touchscreen, or stylus; a drawing tablet is optional.
What gInk does
gInk overlays freehand annotations on your screen, so you can emphasize or jot something down without modifying the app or document underneath. The project describes it as software for improving presentations and demonstrations and noting temporary thoughts beside on-screen content. Its compact interface is built around selectable pen presets: each preset can bundle settings such as color, transparency, and tip width, rather than making you adjust those properties each time you draw. How to annotate your screen with gInk
- Download gInk from the official releases page. The listing identifies v1.2.0 as a pre-release, so check the page for its current status and available versions before choosing a download.
- Start gInk. Its icon appears in the Windows system tray.
- Open drawing using the tray icon or a configured hotkey, then select a pen preset and draw over the screen.
- When finished, use the on-screen exit control or press Escape to leave drawing mode.
Hotkeys are configurable. The README documents snapshots as well, alongside click-through mode, which lets clicks pass through the annotation layer when that mode is enabled. Consult the README for the project’s usage details.
Mouse, touch, stylus, and pressure support
The project documents mouse, touchscreen, and stylus input, including stylus eraser support. It also lists pressure sensitivity. That makes gInk usable with ordinary mouse input, while a compatible pen-input setup can suit handwriting or pressure-sensitive marks. A drawing tablet is not a prerequisite, and the README does not establish compatibility for particular tablet models or manufacturers. Check the gInk documentation for supported input features.

Using gInk across multiple displays
gInk documents support for multiple displays, so annotations can be useful when presenting or demonstrating content across a multi-monitor setup. The project also notes a caveat: displays configured with different DPI scaling values—for example, 100%, 125%, and 150%—can cause the snapshot area or toolbar position to be wrong.

- Right-click the gInk executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and select Change high DPI settings.
- Enable the high-DPI scaling override and choose Application from the scaling options.
This is the project’s documented workaround for the described mismatch, not a guarantee for every Windows version or display arrangement. See the gInk README for its qualification.

gInk is suited to quick freehand marks. If your workflow needs structured diagrams or labels, the gInk README points to ppInk, a Windows on-screen annotation fork. Its README lists handwriting, lines, rectangles, ellipses, arrows, numbering tags, and text tools. Those extra tools may be useful when you need more than pen strokes, but they are not necessary for simple screen emphasis. Read the ppInk README.
