The orange glow seen around Starship’s heatshield during reentry comes from the vehicle entering a brutally hot atmospheric environment. It makes the heating visible, but it does not reveal a precise tile temperature or prove that the heatshield succeeded or failed. SpaceX has continued gathering heatshield data on later flights, but that data collection is not the same as public proof that Starship is ready for routine reuse.
What is the glowing hot hex tile on Starship?
Starship uses a tiled heatshield to protect the vehicle as it reenters the atmosphere and slows down. Aerospace coverage describes the tiles as hexagonal and metallic-ceramic. The striking image is not a standalone demonstration of the shield’s condition: it shows a vehicle experiencing intense heating while the heatshield is meant to protect the structure beneath it. Space.com’s coverage of Starship’s heatshield tiles describes the tile design.
Why are the tiles glowing?
During reentry, the vehicle encounters a severe heating environment. In March 2024, orange glow was reported on Starship’s black ceramic tiles during Flight 3, with plasma surrounding the vehicle. That visual observation is evidence of intense heating, but it is not a temperature measurement or a complete assessment of heatshield performance. Space.com’s Flight 3 reentry report documents the footage.
The Flight 3 glow is historical visual context, not a result from the later Flight 12 or Flight 13 tests. A clip alone cannot establish whether every tile stayed attached, the condition of the structure below the tiles, the amount of damage, or the exact surface temperature.

What does the glowing heatshield mean for reuse?
It means Starship faced significant heating during reentry and that the heatshield has a demanding job: protect the vehicle while it sheds speed through the atmosphere. It does not, by itself, show whether the shield completed that job without damage or whether the vehicle can be reused routinely. That requires engineering assessment beyond what the glow in a video can show.
SpaceX’s later flight summaries describe heatshield testing as part of developing the system. The company says Starship gathered heatshield and structural-strength data during Flight 12, then gathered further heatshield data during Flight 13. SpaceX also says Flight 13 included a dynamic banking maneuver intended to mimic a trajectory for a future return to Starbase. These are company-reported objectives and outcomes; the summaries do not provide a public tile-by-tile engineering report. See SpaceX’s Flight 12 summary and SpaceX’s Flight 13 summary.

What Flight 12’s heatshield experiment involved
Associated Press reported that six Starlink satellites launched on Flight 12 photographed Starship’s heatshield. Some tiles were white to simulate missing tiles, making the flight an experiment in how robust the shield might be under altered conditions. AP also reported that SpaceX wants to establish heatshield performance before attempting a Starship return to the launch pad. Read AP’s Flight 12 report.
Elon Musk, SpaceX’s founder, described the Flight 12 data collection by saying, “We got all the heat shield data we needed and then some!” as quoted by AP. That is Musk’s assessment of the data gathered, not an independent finding that the heatshield is ready for operational reuse.

What the public reports do—and do not—establish
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Flight 3 footage and reporting | Orange glow was visible on black ceramic tiles during reentry, with plasma around the vehicle. | A precise temperature, tile-by-tile condition, or a complete performance verdict. |
| SpaceX Flight 12 summary and AP reporting | SpaceX says it gathered heatshield and structural data; AP reports that six Starlinks photographed the shield and that some tiles simulated missing ones. | A public, tile-by-tile engineering report or certification for routine reuse. |
| SpaceX Flight 13 summary | SpaceX says it gathered further heatshield data and performed a banking maneuver intended to mimic a future return trajectory. | Proof that Starship has completed the development needed for routine return and reuse. |
Neither SpaceX’s cited summaries nor AP’s report supplies a relevant measured tile temperature or a quantitative, public performance result. The available information supports a careful conclusion: the glow shows the severity of the reentry environment, while the state and reusability of the heatshield must be judged from engineering data, not appearance alone.
