Tong Tong is a virtual toddler created by the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI). Its developers say she can set herself new tasks inside a virtual environment, not just carry out instructions. That is a stated design goal, however—not proof that Tong Tong has human-level intelligence or has passed an independent benchmark.
What is Tong Tong?
Tong Tong’s name translates as “Little Girl.” Visitors encountered the virtual toddler at the Frontiers of General Artificial Intelligence Technology Exhibition in Beijing, as reported by Futurism on February 3, 2024. The avatar was developed by BIGAI, an institute founded by computer scientist Zhu Songchun.
Tong Tong is a simulated character, not a human child or a consumer product. The project presents her as an AI research effort in a virtual setting. The reported point of difference is that she is intended to generate tasks for herself as well as respond to tasks set by others.
What is distinctive about the project?
BIGAI describes Tong Tong as an autonomous agent that can learn and act in a virtual environment. In the Futurism report, this autonomy means the system is designed to create new tasks for itself rather than only follow an assigned sequence.

Who created Tong Tong?
Tong Tong was created at the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence. BIGAI’s About page describes it as a nonprofit research-and-development organization affiliated with Peking University, Tsinghua University, and other leading Chinese academic institutions. It states its mission as “Pursuing a unified theory of artificial intelligence to create general intelligent agents for lifting humanity.”

The institute says its approach is “small data, big tasks,” drawing inspiration from cognitive science and developmental psychology. Its listed research areas include computer vision, machine learning, robotics, natural language, cognition and reasoning, multi-agent systems, simulated autonomous intelligence, TongOS, and TongPL.
BIGAI describes simulated autonomous intelligence as encompassing autonomous intelligence, embodied reinforcement learning, cognitive computing, symmetric reality, computer graphics, multi-agent simulations, and human-computer interaction. It says TongOS supports perception-module scheduling, joint interpretation, task planning, multimodal human-machine interaction, and adaptive communication. These are institutional descriptions of the research program and system components; they do not establish Tong Tong’s independent performance.

What does the Tong Test measure?
The Tong Test is BIGAI’s proposed evaluation associated with Tong Tong. Futurism describes it as an inverse and more complex form of the Turing Test, with nearly 150 questions across five quantifiable dimensions—vision, language, cognition, emotion, and learning—plus social and group values.
The framing differs from a conventional test that asks whether a machine can imitate human conversation. The Tong Test is presented as assessing a broader range of abilities and value-related judgments. But the report does not provide scores, validation data, or an independent evaluation of Tong Tong using the test. The number of questions and the dimensions listed describe the proposed test, not a verified result.

Is Tong Tong really intelligent or an AGI system?
Tong Tong is an AI-powered simulated child and a research demonstrator. BIGAI’s statements describe goals such as common-sense learning, judgment, and autonomous behavior. In a video statement translated by Futurism, the project says Tong Tong “possesses a mind” and can discern right from wrong. Those are claims attributed to the project, not independently verified findings.
Futurism also quoted Zhu Songchun saying that AGI should learn and execute tasks in complex settings, guided by values and causal understanding, and that progress requires entities able to comprehend the real world and acquire a wide range of skills. These statements explain the project’s aspirations; they do not demonstrate that Tong Tong has achieved them.
The available sources—a 2024 news report and BIGAI’s institutional description—do not supply independent testing results, a peer-reviewed capability benchmark for Tong Tong, or evidence that it has reached human-level general intelligence. The careful answer is therefore that Tong Tong is intended to explore autonomous, broad-capability AI in a simulated setting; whether it meets a meaningful definition of AGI is not established by the public evidence cited here.
