Yes. In June 2021, an Amazon Prime Air MK27 test drone crashed near Pendleton, Oregon, and a lithium-battery fire spread to several acres of wheat stubble, according to OPB/Northwest News Network’s reporting on FAA incident documents. The reported sequence begins with a motor failure, but the available account does not establish a final investigation finding on the crash’s cause.
What happened in the Pendleton drone crash?
OPB/Northwest News Network reported that FAA incident records described an Amazon MK27 test drone at approximately 160 feet when it experienced motor failure. The aircraft fell, and its lithium battery caught fire on impact. The fire then spread to several acres of wheat stubble near Pendleton, Oregon. OPB/Northwest News Network’s account is the source for this sequence; it recounts FAA documents rather than presenting an independently reviewed final cause determination.
How large was the fire?
The fire spread to several acres of wheat stubble, according to the incident account as reported by OPB/Northwest News Network. That describes the area affected by the field fire; it is not a measurement of the battery fire itself.
What caused the Amazon drone crash?
Motor failure was the reported event preceding the fall. The materials available here do not establish the final probable cause of this specific crash or identify an incident-specific corrective action. It is therefore more precise to describe motor failure as the reported sequence than to state that investigators conclusively determined the root cause.

Which Amazon drone was involved?
The aircraft in the 2021 event was reported as an MK27. It should not be confused with the later MK27-2 discussed in FAA materials or the MK30 that Amazon identifies as its current delivery drone.
MK27-2 regulatory context
The FAA’s 2022 Pendleton environmental assessment describes the MK27-2 as a six-propeller aircraft that can transition between vertical and horizontal flight. It lists a maximum allowable takeoff weight of 91.5 pounds and a maximum allowable package weight of 4.9 pounds. These are MK27-2 specifications, not established specifications for the MK27 involved in the crash. Read the FAA’s 2022 Pendleton environmental assessment.

The U.S. Department of Transportation published special-class airworthiness criteria for the MK27-2 in 2022. Those criteria and subsequent FAA material provide regulatory context, but do not show what action followed the 2021 incident. See the published airworthiness criteria.
Later MK30 operations
A 2025 FAA written re-evaluation for Pendleton discusses MK30 testing and training operations, building on the earlier assessment of MK27-2 testing. It concerns later operations and aircraft, not a final investigation finding about the 2021 MK27 crash. Read the FAA’s 2025 Pendleton re-evaluation.

Amazon describes Prime Air today as an FAA-authorized Part 135 certificated air carrier and identifies the MK30 as its delivery drone. The company says flight monitors track operations and that aircraft may abandon a delivery and return or select a safe landing location during contingencies. Those are descriptions of current procedures, not independent evidence of how the 2021 crash was addressed. See Amazon’s Prime Air information.
A separate FAA draft assessment published in June 2026 for proposed Omaha operations acknowledges that a crash could cause a wildfire and describes planned reporting and coordination with local first responders. It addresses a later proposed operating area, not the Pendleton event. Read the FAA’s draft Omaha assessment.
