Microplastics have been detected in cloud-water samples from mountain sites in Japan and China, and laboratory studies suggest some particles could influence cloud-forming processes. But no cited study shows that microplastics have changed rainfall, storms, cloud lifetimes or weather patterns. Their presence is measured; a weather effect remains a possibility, not an established consequence.

Have microplastics actually been found in clouds?

Yes. Researchers have identified microplastic particles in cloud water collected at specific mountain locations. These are direct measurements from the sampled sites and times, not evidence that every cloud contains microplastics or that the measured concentrations represent the global atmosphere.

Study Where and what was sampled Reported result What the result establishes
Environmental Chemistry Letters, 2023 Cloud water from Japanese mountain sites at elevations of 1,300–3,776 m Mean concentrations of 6.7–13.9 pieces per liter; particle Feret diameters of 7.1–94.6 micrometers; nine polymer types identified Microplastics were detected in those samples. Collection equipment varied by site, and some methods may have trapped particles, potentially leading to underestimates.
Environmental Science & Technology Letters, January 2024 issue; published online November 15, 2023 28 liquid cloud-water samples collected at Mount Tai, eastern China, at 1,545 m above sea level An average of 463 particles per liter of cloud water, corresponding in the paper to 0.21 particles per cubic meter of air; particle sizes ranged from 8 to 1,542 micrometers, with 60% under 100 micrometers Microplastics were present at this site in the collected samples. These figures are local study results, not global averages.

The Japanese and Mount Tai figures should not be treated as a direct comparison of contamination levels: the sites, collection approaches and reported measurements differ. Cloud-water concentration and air concentration also use different units and describe different quantities.

Can microplastics change how clouds form?

Possibly, through cloud microphysics—the small-scale processes involved in forming cloud droplets and ice. Two proposed pathways are acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), around which water vapor can condense, and as ice-nucleating particles (INPs), which can help ice form in supercooled cloud droplets.

Why particle surfaces and aging matter

Whether a plastic particle can participate in these processes may depend on its polymer chemistry, size, surface condition and environmental aging. The Japanese cloud-water study found abundant hydrophilic groups on sampled particles and interpreted this as suggesting potential condensation-nucleus behavior. That is an indication of a possible mechanism, not proof that those particles changed cloud formation outdoors.

In the Mount Tai work, laboratory exposure to cloud-like conditions was associated with smaller, rougher particles and with more lead, mercury and oxygen-containing groups on particle surfaces. The researchers also found common polymers including PET, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyamide. These observations suggest cloud processing can alter particle properties; they do not demonstrate a weather outcome.

What controlled experiments show

A 2024 Nature Communications study tested model polyethylene particles as well as particles made from polypropylene, polystyrene and PET. In controlled experiments, ice-nucleation activity was linked to polymer chemistry and sunlight-induced weathering, with surface chemistry related to condensation and immersion-freezing behavior. This supports the plausibility of a microphysical pathway. It does not establish how often such particles occur in clouds at effective concentrations or show that they have changed weather in the atmosphere.

Is there evidence that microplastics are changing the weather?

No demonstrated weather change is established by the cited studies. The field studies measured particles in cloud water, while the laboratory work tested mechanisms under controlled conditions. None reports a measured microplastic-caused change in precipitation, cloud lifetime, storms or a climate statistic.

A 2022 perspective in Nature Geoscience argued that atmospheric micro- and nanoplastic concentrations were then low, making a substantial radiative-forcing contribution unlikely in regions with other natural or pollution-related aerosols. The authors allowed that remote or marine clouds might be perturbed and emphasized the need for more measurements and better characterization. That assessment describes uncertainty and a possible research direction, not evidence of an observed weather shift.

Why detections do not yet predict a weather effect

  • Presence is not the same as influence. Finding particles in collected cloud water does not show that they were abundant enough, or active enough, to alter a cloud’s behavior.
  • Other aerosols matter. The potential importance of plastics depends partly on their abundance and properties relative to other particles in the atmosphere.
  • Cloud conditions vary. Particle type, surface aging, sunlight exposure and cloud conditions can affect whether a proposed condensation or ice-nucleation mechanism operates.
  • Sampling is limited. The available field measurements come from particular mountain locations and collection methods. They cannot establish how common the particles are across cloud types, regions or seasons.
  • A mechanism is not a forecast. Even if a particle helps form a droplet or ice crystal, that alone does not determine whether a cloud produces more rain, lasts longer or changes a storm.

What researchers would need to establish next

Assessing a real atmospheric effect requires more than confirming that particles are present. Researchers need broader measurements across locations and cloud conditions, better characterization of polymer and surface properties, and evidence connecting particle concentrations and activity to cloud processes in the atmosphere. Only then can possible microphysical effects be evaluated against other aerosols and linked, if warranted, to precipitation or climate outcomes.
