Publicly available evidence does not establish whether OpenAI trained Sora on YouTube videos. At the May 10, 2024, Bloomberg Technology Summit, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap was asked directly and, according to a contemporaneous report, did not give a yes-or-no answer. OpenAI’s public technical description also did not identify YouTube as a training source.

At the Bloomberg Technology Summit in San Francisco on May 10, 2024, Bloomberg interviewer Shirin Ghaffary asked Lightcap: “Can you say, and clear up once and for all, whether Sora was trained on YouTube data?”

Futurism’s May 13 account says Lightcap began by saying, “Yeah, I mean, look, the conversation around data is really important,” then spoke generally about understanding where data comes from and the possibility of a future “content ID system for AI.” Futurism quoted him concluding, “So, yeah, we’re looking at this problem. It’s really hard.” Ghaffary followed up, “So no answer on the YouTube. For now.” Futurism’s report presents selected remarks, not a verified complete transcript, so the exchange should not be treated as a full record of Lightcap’s response.
Did OpenAI confirm that Sora used YouTube videos?
No. Lightcap’s reported answer did not confirm YouTube use, but it did not rule it out either. The sources available establish that the question was asked and left unresolved in that exchange—not what was in Sora’s training data.

There had also been an earlier, similarly inconclusive exchange with OpenAI’s then-CTO Mira Murati. As Futurism reported, Murati said, “We used publicly available data and licensed data.” Asked whether that included YouTube videos, she replied, “I’m actually not sure about that.” Futurism also reported that Murati later confirmed the use of Shutterstock videos; that confirmation does not answer whether YouTube videos were used.
What OpenAI disclosed about Sora’s training data
OpenAI’s February 2024 Sora technical report describes the model’s approach and says it learns from internet-scale data, but it does not enumerate the sources of its training videos or name YouTube. The report therefore provides technical context, not a source-by-source dataset disclosure. OpenAI’s Sora technical report cannot, by itself, establish either inclusion or exclusion of YouTube videos.

The Associated Press likewise reported at Sora’s announcement that OpenAI had not disclosed the imagery and video sources used to train the model. The AP’s report describes what had been made public at launch; it is not evidence that a particular source was or was not used.
YouTube’s rules are a separate question
Bloomberg reported that YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said using YouTube videos to train Sora would violate YouTube’s rules. That is YouTube’s stated position on its policies. It does not show that OpenAI used YouTube videos, nor does it establish whether it did not. Bloomberg’s report on Mohan’s remarks concerns the rules question, not proof of Sora’s training-data provenance.

What can be concluded
- Lightcap was asked directly whether Sora was trained on YouTube data and did not answer directly in the exchange reported by Futurism.
- Murati’s earlier remarks described publicly available and licensed data but left YouTube’s inclusion uncertain.
- OpenAI’s published technical material and the AP’s launch coverage did not provide a complete, source-by-source account of Sora’s training videos.
- YouTube’s stated rules position does not establish what OpenAI actually used.
On the sources available, the accurate answer is unknown: YouTube video use has neither been confirmed nor ruled out.
