A 2024 report described roughly a dozen possible mass concentrations inferred from tiny changes in radio pulses from distant pulsars. The researchers did not photograph or directly detect objects: they found timing deviations that might be caused by gravity, and the detailed analysis says the candidates are not definitive evidence of intervening masses or dark matter.

What did astronomers detect?

They detected changes in the arrival times of radio pulses from millisecond pulsars. Pulsars are rotating neutron stars that emit regular pulses, making their arrival times useful as exceptionally precise clocks. If a concentration of mass passes near the line of sight between a pulsar and Earth, its gravity could alter how long the pulses take to reach us.

The proposed signal is therefore an indirect gravitational effect—a deviation in a timing record—not an image or direct observation of an object. The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) said the analysis examined data from 65 millisecond pulsars and identified around a dozen candidate incidents. IFLScience described 12 candidates associated with eight pulsars. Those figures refer to possible events, not confirmed objects (RAS, July 2024; IFLScience, July 16, 2024).

How can a mass affect a pulsar’s signal?

Gravity changes the travel time of radio pulses passing near a mass, producing a delay known as a Shapiro delay. The RAS announcement said a mass equal to the Sun’s can produce a delay of about 10 microseconds, while the observations had timing resolution on the order of nanoseconds. That precision allows researchers to look for subtle deviations, but it does not by itself establish that a deviation was caused by a passing mass.

In his manuscript, John LoSecco describes fitting a four-parameter model to pulsar timing residuals—the differences between observed and expected pulse-arrival times. A credible interpretation must account for the motion of the pulsar and observer, radio-plasma effects, and intrinsic timing noise. Noise can resemble a gravitational-delay signature, and the manuscript reports candidates that weaken or disappear when a data epoch is removed (LoSecco, “Searching for Mass Concentrations with Precision Pulsar Timing”).

Why the candidate count is not a confirmed discovery

The public announcement’s “around a dozen” is not the same as a catalog of verified objects. LoSecco’s manuscript describes nine candidates after removing duplicates in one search and two in a search with red noise subtracted. It concludes that the search did not identify convincing sources or provide definitive evidence for a significant occurrence of the modeled gravitational delays. The RAS announcement identifies the data as PPTA2, while the manuscript describes IPTA data release 2; the reviewed sources do not explain that naming difference.

  • Some fitted candidates had negative masses. A negative fitted mass is not what a real concentration of matter is expected to represent. The manuscript says the similar numbers of positive- and negative-mass events suggest a common source for the apparent signals.
  • Some candidates depended on particular data epochs. The disappearance of some signals when an epoch is removed raises the possibility that fitting or noise, rather than an intervening mass, produced the apparent pattern.
  • Timing precision is not the same as certainty about cause. Nanosecond-scale resolution helps identify small changes, but interpreting those changes still requires distinguishing gravitational effects from other timing behavior.

These are reasons to treat the events as candidates for scrutiny, not detections of confirmed objects. The manuscript is available at arXiv:2310.12251; its page is dated October 18, 2023 and carries a 2025 publication-year label.

What might the masses be?

The timing data alone cannot identify the cause or composition of a candidate signal. Possible interpretations mentioned in the 2024 coverage include rogue planets, brown dwarfs, white dwarfs, and concentrations of dark matter. These are hypotheses, not identifications. As LoSecco put it: “I have been warned not to call them planets, not to call them dark matter, just call them mass concentrations because, just by looking in the radio, you can’t determine what they are.” He is a professor at the University of Notre Dame (University of Notre Dame faculty profile).

The RAS quoted LoSecco describing one possible candidate as “a distortion of about 20 per cent of the mass of the Sun,” adding, “This object could be a candidate for dark matter.” This is a suggested value and interpretation for a candidate—not a confirmed object’s measured mass or proof that it is dark matter. LoSecco also told the RAS: “The true nature of dark matter is a mystery” (RAS, July 2024).

Could pulsar timing reveal dark matter?

In principle, precise pulsar timing can help researchers investigate gravitational effects from masses along the line of sight, including possible concentrations of dark matter. But this report does not confirm dark matter, rogue planets, or any other specific kind of object. Its value is that it highlights timing data worth examining while showing how difficult it is to separate a possible gravitational signal from noise and other sources of timing variation.
