Could “lachetous” mean a plant that grows on another plant? It sounds plausible—but a convincing definition generated by an AI is not evidence that a word is recognized or used with that meaning. The 2020 feature was about thisworddoesnotexist.com, a word-generation website, not a dictionary or a word-checking service.
What the site did
In a feature published May 14, 2020, Futurism described thisworddoesnotexist.com as a site that produced invented words paired with plausible-sounding definitions. Futurism credited former Instagram engineer Thomas Dimson with creating it and reported that refreshing the page generated a new word. The results varied in quality; some definitions were, in Futurism’s description, “a little bit off.”
That account is historical. It does not establish whether the site is available now, what model it might use today, or whether its behavior has changed.
Why an invented word can sound convincing
Futurism reported that the site used GPT-2, OpenAI’s language model. OpenAI described GPT-2’s training objective as predicting the next word in text. A model trained to produce likely sequences can generate a word-like string and a fluent definition; fluency does not establish that the word appears in a dictionary or that its proposed meaning is accepted.

OpenAI’s February 2019 announcement said GPT-2 had 1.5 billion parameters and was trained on a dataset of 8 million web pages. OpenAI’s GPT-2 model card, last updated in November 2019, described WebText as text from 45 million links posted by Reddit users. The card explains that the text came from outbound links, rather than being taken directly from Reddit. These figures describe GPT-2’s development, not the fake-word site’s vocabulary, accuracy, or current capability.
OpenAI summarized the model’s objective this way: “Our model, called GPT-2 (a successor to GPT), was trained simply to predict the next word in 40GB of Internet text.” That objective helps explain why a generated definition can read naturally without being lexically reliable. Futurism also reported that GPT-2 was not trained on dictionaries, another reason not to treat its output as dictionary evidence.

Generated definition or established meaning?
A generated definition is text produced by a model. An established meaning depends on evidence of how a word is actually used and on the conventions of a relevant lexical source. The site’s output may be entertaining or useful as a creative prompt, but it does not verify that a word is real or that its definition is correct.

- Check a word’s meaning: consult a reputable dictionary or another source that documents usage; do not infer acceptance from a polished AI definition.
- Interpret the historical claim narrowly: Futurism’s 2020 article reported GPT-2 use and refresh-to-generate behavior at that time, not present-day operation or performance.
