In January 2021, a report described SpaceX’s plans to convert two oil rigs, named Phobos and Deimos, into offshore spaceports for Starship. The report showed photographs of the rigs, but it did not establish that either had been converted or used for a launch. Their current status is not established by the sources cited here.
What were SpaceX’s floating spaceports?
They were two oil rigs that a January 22, 2021 Futurism report said SpaceX had acquired and intended to convert into offshore spaceports for Starship. The report identified them as Phobos and Deimos, names of Mars’s two moons.
The article included photographs from ports in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Brownsville, Texas. Those images showed the rigs and nameplates associated with Phobos and Deimos; they were not evidence of completed launch facilities or modifications. The report said it was unclear when conversion work would begin.
The plan echoed a statement attributed to Elon Musk in June 2020 and reproduced by Futurism: “SpaceX is building floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, Moon and hypersonic travel around Earth.” That statement expressed intent at the time; it does not confirm that the rigs were later converted.

- Extremely exquisite SpaceX starship rocket model (For collection or display, not a toy! Children should not buy it)
- This model is a highly simulated SpaceX starship rocket model. The main body of the first-level super heavy booster is made of precision aluminum alloy tubes. The second-level starship is embedded with reinforced aluminum alloy tubes. The rest of the rocket materials are made of high-quality imported resin. Excellent laser forming ability and long-lasting storage
- The proportional model:1:375
- Actual height: 32cm (the core diameter is 24mm, the real rocket is 9 meters in diameter) This ratio is the best choice for desktop placement
- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
Did SpaceX turn the oil rigs into Starship launchpads?
The available sources do not establish that Phobos or Deimos became launchpads, that conversion work was completed, or that either rig is currently active. They also do not establish the rigs’ present owner, location, or physical condition. That uncertainty is not proof that the project was cancelled.
SpaceX’s May 22, 2026 Starship Flight 12 page describes the first flight of Starship and Super Heavy V3 and the first Starship flight from Pad 2. It documents a land-based program milestone, not the status of Phobos or Deimos.

Are SpaceX’s drone ships the same as floating launchpads?
No. A droneship used to recover a booster after launch is different from a platform used to launch a rocket. SpaceX describes Falcon boosters as landing on autonomous spaceport droneships at sea or on land-based landing zones in its mission information. That is landing and recovery infrastructure, not an offshore launch complex.
| Infrastructure | Function | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Phobos and Deimos oil rigs | Proposed offshore launch-spaceport conversion for Starship | A 2021 report described the plan; it did not establish conversion or operation. |
| Falcon autonomous spaceport droneships | Landing and recovery after launch | SpaceX describes them as ocean landing locations. |
The distinction matters for regulation and operations, too. The FAA’s LC-39A Starship environmental review treats an offshore launch platform as a separate project from floating platforms discussed for landing or recovery. An offshore launch proposal would require its own design, safety analysis, logistical support, and environmental review.

Where does Starship launch now?
SpaceX’s Starship operations at Boca Chica, Texas, use a coastal, land-based site. The FAA describes the Boca Chica launch site as adjacent to public lands on its Starship operations page. This provides context for Starship’s land-based launch operations; it does not resolve what happened to the two rigs.
