A tidy route, blue path, or sparse set of object icons can omit information used by the system—and cannot tell you by itself whether the system’s next action is safe.
What does the FSD dashboard visualization actually show?
It renders selected information about the vehicle’s surroundings and intended action. It is not a live, exhaustive map of the car’s perception. Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says: “The Full Self-Driving (Supervised) visualization may not be a holistic representation of the objects, road markings, road signals, and other variables that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) takes into account as it attempts to drive to your destination.”
That distinction matters in both directions: something missing from the screen may still be considered by FSD, while a clear-looking display does not prove the system has correctly understood every hazard. The blue path and icons can help explain what the system appears to be doing, but they are not a diagnostic overlay or a guarantee of what it will do next.
Why might the displayed lane or road shape look wrong?
There are two related but different possibilities: the map data used for routing may be less accurate than current data, or the vehicle’s camera-based scene interpretation may differ from what the display renders. They can also interact. The dashboard alone may not reveal which explains a particular mismatch.

Map data can be out of date
Tesla’s Model Y documentation says greater accuracy is achieved with the most recent map data. That makes map freshness relevant when a route or road layout appears inconsistent. It does not mean that updating the map will make the visualization complete; Tesla separately warns that camera data and other information used by FSD may not appear on screen.
The visualization does not expose all camera input
The Model Y documentation says FSD uses camera data “that may not be represented in the visualization.” Tesla describes vision-based configurations in which radar is disabled. The display therefore should not be read as a full transcript of sensor input, and the absence of a pictured object is not evidence that no sensor information about it exists.

Why does glare, fog, or another visibility problem matter?
Visibility can affect the system’s ability to detect and respond to roadway conditions even when the dashboard does not make the problem obvious. In Engineering Analysis EA26002-10023, NHTSA examined degraded roadway conditions and said available incident data raised concerns that Tesla’s degradation-detection system did not appropriately detect or warn about conditions such as glare and airborne obscurants. In reviewed crashes, FSD lost track of or never detected a lead vehicle.
NHTSA also recorded Tesla’s post-incident assessment that a later degradation-detection update might have affected 3 of 9 identified incidents. The agency noted Tesla’s statements that internal data and labeling limitations prevented uniform crash-event analysis and could have led to under-reporting during parts of the study period. These findings describe concerns in reviewed cases; they do not establish that every FSD trip, or every trip in poor visibility, will fail.

How should a driver respond when the screen and road seem to disagree?
Judge the road directly and be ready to take control, rather than treating the visualization as proof that a maneuver is safe. Tesla says the driver may override FSD whenever uncomfortable or uncertain. Its Owner’s Manual gives a specific warning: “NEVER make assumptions and predict when and where Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will stop or continue through an intersection or road marking.”
- If the displayed path conflicts with the road, do not assume the path or the road interpretation is correct.
- If visibility, markings, or traffic make the intended maneuver uncertain, intervene rather than waiting for the display to resolve the discrepancy.
- Do not infer from a clean-looking visualization that the vehicle will stop, continue, or yield as expected.
What can the dashboard tell you about FSD safety overall?
A single on-screen scene or maneuver cannot establish how safe the system is overall. Tesla’s evidence dashboard says its studies stratify collision and surrogate-safety rates by road class, control type, and time period, and cautions against reducing safety to a single evaluation of system-initiated maneuvers. Comparisons need to preserve those distinctions rather than treating one dashboard behavior as representative of every road or condition.

Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report also presents extrapolated injury and fatality estimates based on assumptions about collision reductions. Those estimates are projections, not direct counts of injuries or fatalities attributable to FSD. The distinction matters when comparing company-reported safety figures with observed crash data.
