To turn on Lossless Audio, open Apple Music’s audio-quality settings, enable lossless playback, and choose a quality separately for streaming and downloads. The setting is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows, and Android; the exact menu path depends on your device.
Enable Lossless Audio on your device
Apple Music’s menu wording can vary slightly by operating-system version. If you do not see a listed option, update the app or operating system and check Apple’s current device instructions.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, then tap Apps > Music.
- Tap Audio Quality.
- Turn on Lossless Audio.
- Choose a quality under Streaming and, separately, under Downloads.
Apple documents this path in its iPhone instructions.
Mac
- Open the Music app.
- Choose Music > Settings > Playback. Older versions may use Preferences instead of Settings.
- Turn on Lossless Audio.
- Set the quality for streaming and downloads separately.

Windows
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Choose Sidebar Actions > Settings > Playback.
- Turn on Lossless audio.
- Choose the quality for streaming and downloads.
See Apple’s Windows instructions if the labels differ in your app version.
Android
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Tap More > Settings > Audio Quality.
- Turn on Lossless.
- Choose streaming and download quality separately.

Choose a quality for streaming and downloads
Streaming and downloaded music have separate quality controls, so set each according to how you listen. Apple’s options are:

The figures are format ceilings, not a guarantee that every song is available at that resolution or that your device and audio equipment can reproduce it. Apple says much of its catalog is available in ALAC, ranging from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz. ALAC, or Apple Lossless Audio Codec, compresses audio while preserving the source data. Check whether your headphones and device can play it losslessly
Turning on the setting does not make a Bluetooth connection lossless. Apple states that Bluetooth connections are not lossless; AirPods and most wireless Beats use the AAC Bluetooth codec. For lossless playback, use wired headphones, a compatible receiver or powered speakers, or built-in speakers on a supported device.
On iPhone and iPad, playback above 48 kHz requires an external DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Other devices and computer setups have their own capabilities, so check the device specifications before buying a DAC. Apple’s device guidance explains the connection limits.

Make existing downloads lossless
Changing the download-quality setting does not upgrade music already stored on your device. Delete existing Apple Music downloads, then download the tracks or albums again after enabling Lossless and selecting the desired download quality.
Confirm a track is playing in lossless quality
Look for the Lossless icon on an album page or in the playback controls. The icon indicates lossless availability, but actual playback quality still depends on the track’s available version and your connected audio hardware. Apple describes the indicator in its lossless audio article.
