Elon Musk said he bought back the x.com domain from PayPal in July 2017 because it had “great sentimental value” to him. He also said he had no plans for it at the time. PayPal confirmed the sale but did not disclose the price.
Why did Musk buy back x.com?
Musk’s stated reason was personal, not a business plan. On July 11, 2017, he posted: “Thanks PayPal for allowing me to buy back X.com! No plans right now, but it has great sentimental value to me.” Inc. quoted his statement.
What happened in the sale?
PayPal confirmed that it sold x.com to Musk, whom it described as the domain’s previous owner. The transaction took place the week before July 11, 2017, according to DomainInvesting’s contemporaneous report. PayPal spokeswoman Amanda Miller said, “We are delighted to sell the domain x.com back to its previous owner, Elon Musk,” as quoted in the report and reproduced by XBIZ.
PayPal declined to reveal the sale price, and the cited contemporaneous coverage does not establish what Musk paid.

How was x.com connected to PayPal?
The domain’s history reaches back to Musk’s online-banking venture, X.com Corporation. The company was incorporated in March 1999 to provide internet banking, then merged with Confinity on March 30, 2000. The merged company formally changed its name to PayPal, Inc. in February 2001, according to the company’s SEC filing.
The 2017 transaction was a sale of the x.com domain—not an acquisition of PayPal or its payment service. X.com was Musk’s earlier company; PayPal was the name the merged company later adopted.
