On Android 8.0 Oreo, the Hide “running in the background” Notification app was a historical workaround for dismissing the persistent alert—not a way to stop apps from running or using battery. It required notification access, and its present-day availability and compatibility are unverified. Android 8.1 added built-in controls for the related “Apps using battery” notification, so the right method depends on which Oreo version you have.
Why Android Oreo showed “Running in the background”
Android 8.0 displayed a persistent system notification when an app was running in the background. Contemporary reporting said Android 8.0 did not provide a native option to dismiss that notice, prompting third-party workarounds. Background activity can be legitimate—for example, an app may need it to provide a service—but the alert can also draw attention to apps whose activity you do not want.
The notification is an alert about background activity, not a control that stops it. Hiding the alert changes what you see; it does not prevent the app from continuing its work or resolve battery drain. For context on the original Oreo workaround, see AndroidAuthority’s September 6, 2017 coverage.
Android 8.0: the historical app workaround
The utility called Hide “running in the background” Notification, by iboalali, was described in 2017 as a simple way to hide the persistent Oreo notice. The reported setup was to install the app, grant it notification access, and leave it installed. If the alert did not disappear immediately, the contemporary guide suggested restarting the phone. At the time, the app was described as free and open source, with optional donations; those are historical descriptions, not confirmation of its current status. - 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Understand the notification-access permission
Notification access is a meaningful permission: Android asks you to authorize an app to access notifications. Do not grant it without understanding the access requested and trusting the app. The historical workaround depended on this permission to hide the system notice; it was not merely a visual toggle built into Android 8.0.
Is the app still available?
Current Google Play availability and ongoing developer support are unverified. APKMirror’s archived listing records package com.iboalali.sysnotifsnooze, version 1.9.3vc119, dated April 23, 2024, and states Android 8.0+ as the minimum. That archive entry does not establish that the app is currently available from an official source or compatible with newer Android releases: APKMirror listing.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Android 8.1: use the built-in notification controls
Android 8.1 introduced notification controls for the related “Apps using battery” alert. Contemporary guides described options to manage the notification for an individual app and to hide the notification category more broadly. The exact labels and paths may vary by device maker, so treat these as Oreo-era instructions rather than directions guaranteed to match every phone today.
- For one app: when the “Apps using battery” notification appears, use its notification controls to manage or turn off that app’s notification.
- For the broader category: open the notification settings for the system component or notification category responsible for “Apps using battery,” then disable that category if your device exposes the control.
Android 8.1’s controls are documented in Gadget Hacks’ October 25, 2017 guide. A separate WukiHow Oreo guide also explains the version distinction and cautions that hiding the notice does not stop background activity.

Choose between hiding the alert and addressing the activity
| Android version or goal | Historical option | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Android 8.0 Oreo | Third-party Hide “running in the background” Notification utility; required notification access | Hides the persistent notice, but does not stop the app’s background work. |
| Android 8.1 Oreo | Built-in notification controls for “Apps using battery,” with per-app and broader category controls described at the time | Manages visibility of the related notification; it does not itself resolve the app’s background activity. |
| Stop unwanted background behavior | Check the app’s own settings or uninstall the app | Addresses whether you want the app to keep running, rather than merely removing its alert. |
If you only want a less cluttered notification shade, hiding the notice may suit that goal. If an app’s background activity is unwanted, inspect its own settings or uninstall it instead. The original Android Enthusiasts question uses the phrasing “How can I disable ‘app is running in the background’ notifications?”: Android Enthusiasts Stack Exchange.
