Keep the ID as the database primary key. Include it in the public URL when stable identity or simple collision-free routing matters more than a cleaner path; an ID-plus-slug URL can offer both a dependable lookup key and a human-readable description.
Does including the ID make a post URL faster?
Not by itself in any dependable, universal way. The SitePoint discussion that prompted this question compared selecting a post by its numeric primary key with selecting it by its name, but it did not report a controlled benchmark. A participant argued that the approaches are “virtually the same” when the post name has a unique index; that is forum advice from February 12, 2013, not a measured result for every PHP/MySQL application. Read the SitePoint discussion.
Actual performance depends on the database, indexes, query, caching, and workload. A numeric ID is often a natural lookup key, but a unique indexed slug can also support efficient lookup. Choose the URL format for routing, identity, and usability rather than assuming that putting an ID in the path will make a site scale better.
What are the trade-offs between the URL formats?
| Format | Strengths | Costs and requirements |
|---|---|---|
/web-design-trends/ |
Readable and descriptive; no numeric ID in the public path. | Slugs must be unique in the routing namespace. If a title or slug changes, preserve the old URL or redirect it. |
/283/web-design-trends/ |
The ID can identify the post even after its title changes; the slug adds context and readability. | The path is longer. If the route accepts different trailing slugs for the same ID, redirect alternate variants to one canonical URL. |
/283/ |
Short and straightforward to resolve by ID; may be convenient to type or use in offline promotion. | It gives readers little indication of the page topic. |
When should you choose a slug-only URL?
Choose a descriptive slug when readable links are a priority and you can manage uniqueness and URL changes reliably. A slug-only route does not mean the database must identify records by title: the application can look up a unique slug while retaining a separate numeric primary key.
#1 Best Overall
Enforce uniqueness
Two posts can have the same title, so their slugs can collide too. Enforce uniqueness in the database for the relevant namespace and define a collision rule, such as adding a disambiguating suffix. Do not rely on titles being unique.
Keep links working after edits
If a title change creates a new slug, keep the previous slug available or redirect the old URL to the current one. Without that handling, bookmarks and links to the earlier URL can stop working.

When does an ID-plus-slug URL make more sense?
Use an ID-plus-slug route when you want the record’s identity to remain stable as its title changes, or when resolving a unique numeric key simplifies routing. In this design, the ID can select the post and the trailing slug can describe it to readers. The public URL does not have to match the database’s storage key in either format.
Make the routing behavior explicit: if the ID is authoritative, compare the requested slug with the post’s current canonical slug and redirect mismatches to the canonical URL. Otherwise, multiple paths with different trailing text may display the same record.

What URL format does Google recommend?
Google Search Central advises using readable words rather than long ID numbers when possible. It recommends simple, intelligible URL structures to help people and Google understand them; it does not say that removing an ID guarantees better rankings. Google’s URL structure guidance was last updated December 10, 2025 UTC.

- Use hyphens to separate words in readable paths.
- Avoid unnecessary URL parameters, especially parameters that do not change the content.
- Use consistent casing when the server treats case variants as equivalent.
- Percent-encode reserved characters as specified by the cited URI standard: RFC 3986.
How to decide for a new site
- Keep the numeric primary key internally. Choose the public URL format separately from the database schema.
- Choose slug-only URLs if readable paths are your priority and you can enforce unique slugs and preserve old URLs through redirects.
- Choose ID-plus-slug URLs if stable identity or simple ID-based routing is more valuable. Make the ID authoritative and redirect inaccurate or outdated slugs to one canonical path.
- Test the route behavior for duplicate titles, title edits, and alternate URL casing before publishing links.
- Measure before optimizing for speed. Compare the actual indexed queries and workload if performance is a concern; the format alone does not establish which implementation will be faster.
