The existing Burj Khalifa is not being retrofitted. Energy Vault says its proposed building-integrated gravity-energy-storage towers could rise from more than 300 meters to as much as 1,000 meters, but those capacity and carbon-payback figures are design targets—not results from an operating skyscraper.
What does it mean to turn a skyscraper into a battery?
Energy Vault’s proposed EVu system would integrate gravity energy storage into a hollow tower superstructure. In broad terms, the building would do more than provide space: its structure would also house a mechanism for storing and releasing electricity. Energy Vault describes EVu as a design for towers over 300 meters and up to 1,000 meters tall, with potential multi-gigawatt-hour capacity for the host building and adjacent buildings.
That is a proposed use for future construction, not a project to modify the Burj Khalifa. SOM’s role is to serve as the exclusive architect and structural engineer for the next generation of Energy Vault’s fixed-frame and deployable gravity-energy-storage structures. The collaboration is led by SOM partners Adam Semel and Scott Duncan, together with structural engineer William F. Baker, who is associated with the Burj Khalifa’s structural design.
How does a gravity-powered skyscraper store renewable energy?
When electricity is plentiful, motors use it to lift heavy concrete or composite masses. When power is needed, the masses descend and drive generators, turning stored gravitational potential energy back into electricity. TIME’s description of Energy Vault’s EVx system similarly centers on raising massive concrete blocks to store energy and lowering them to release it.

- For ANTIGRAVITY A1 Drones
- Designed for ANTIGRAVITY A1 Drones.
- Provides up to 39 Minutes of Flight Time.
- Offers 4345mAh of Power Capacity.
- Battery Chemistry: Lithium-Ion.
The basic trade is straightforward: use electricity to raise weight, then recover some of that energy as the weight comes down. The building-integrated concept applies this approach to a tower’s structure. It does not mean that the skyscraper itself generates renewable electricity; it is intended to store electricity supplied to the system and return it later.
What has been built, and what remains a proposal?
| System or claim | What is established | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| EVu skyscraper concept | Energy Vault’s May 30, 2024 announcement describes a hollow tower over 300 meters and up to 1,000 meters tall, with claimed multi-GWh capacity and a projected 3–4-year carbon-payback timeframe. | These are company design targets and projections, not measured performance from a completed gravity-powered skyscraper. |
| Rudong EVx, China | Energy Vault announced successful testing and commissioning on May 7, 2024, for a system rated at 25 MW/100 MWh. The company described it as the world’s first commercial grid-scale gravity-storage system. A February 29, 2024 company release said it had connected to the local State Grid in December 2023. | Rudong is a grid-scale EVx installation, not a gravity-storage tower integrated into a supertall building. |
| Other announced China projects | Energy Vault’s February 29, 2024 release said announced China projects totaled 3.7 GWh, with 468 MWh under construction at that time. | Those announced and under-construction figures are not evidence that all the capacity was operating. |
The distinction matters: the Rudong milestone shows that a related gravity-storage technology reached testing, commissioning and grid connection. It does not verify EVu’s proposed skyscraper scale, multi-GWh capacity, economics or carbon-payback estimate.

What are the potential advantages—and the unresolved trade-offs?
Gravity storage can use abundant structural materials and does not rely on the electrochemical storage mechanism used by lithium-ion batteries, which may avoid that form of degradation. Energy Vault presents long-duration storage as a potential application. Those characteristics do not, by themselves, establish a system’s delivered cost, efficiency, safety or useful lifetime in a particular project.
The available figures are not a like-for-like current price comparison. Gulf News reported in 2024 that Energy Vault’s then-current systems cost about 5–10 cents per kilowatt-hour and quoted the company’s goal of getting below 5 cents per kilowatt-hour over a project lifetime. The article compared that goal with a BloombergNEF lithium-ion estimate of about 13.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. These are dated estimates reported in 2024, not current market prices; the comparison should not be read as a verified cost for EVu towers.

The available information does not provide comparable project-specific figures for gravity towers, lithium-ion storage and pumped hydro on round-trip efficiency, storage duration, degradation rates, safety outcomes, land or structural requirements, or permitting schedules. A tower would have to be evaluated as a building and an energy project together; the concept’s height or storage target alone cannot settle those comparisons.

Energy Vault projects a 3–4-year carbon-payback timeframe for EVu, but that is a company projection, not a measured result for a completed tower. A suptall building also has to pass through planning, permitting, financing and construction, all of which can take years. Gulf News reported that analyst Thomas Boyes saw mixed-use towers incorporating the technology as more likely in the 2030s. That is an outlook, not a confirmed deployment date or project schedule.
