Choose by exact CPU socket, motherboard and case clearance; the models range from 37 mm to 67 mm tall, and the manufacturer specifications do not establish a comparative performance winner.
Before choosing a cooler, verify the system
“Mini PC” can mean an upgradeable mini-ITX or HTPC desktop, or a prebuilt system with an embedded processor and proprietary thermal assembly. This guide applies to the former: a compact desktop with a socketed CPU and a chassis designed for a standard cooler. The product pages below do not establish fit in embedded-CPU systems or proprietary designs.
Start with the exact computer or motherboard model and CPU. A cooler’s socket list is a necessary check, but not proof that its footprint clears the board or that it can cool a particular processor adequately. Noctua explicitly warns that its NH-L9 line is “Not suitable for CPUs that create high heat loads.” Check the manufacturer’s CPU compatibility guidance before buying.
Seven options, organized by socket and height
This is a shortlist based on manufacturer-stated socket support and dimensions, not a tested ranking. Listed overall heights include the fan. Confirm current compatibility on the manufacturer page for your exact board and CPU.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact low-profile cooler with only 65mm total height – ideal for HTPCs, ITX and Small Form Factor builds
- Does not overhang the RAM or PCIe slots on most current motherboards
- Highly optimised NF-A9x14 slim 92mm fan with PWM support and Low-Noise Adaptor for automatic speed control and ultra-quiet operation
- Includes high-end NT-H1 thermal paste and SecuFirm2 mounting system for easy installation on Intel LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x and AMD AM5 & AM4 (offset mounting option for best efficiency)
- Recommended for CPUs with low to moderate heat dissipation (see CPU compatibility list), e.g. Intel 285K, 265K, 245K or AMD Ryzen 7950X3D, 7900X3D, 7800X3D, 7700 etc.
37 mm: Noctua’s NH-L9 models
| Model | Socket support stated by manufacturer | Height and fit notes |
|---|---|---|
| Noctua NH-L9i | Intel LGA1156, 1155, 1150, 1151 and 1200 | 37 mm. Compact footprint; check the CPU compatibility list, particularly for heat load. |
| Noctua NH-L9i-17xx | Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851; the specification also lists LGA1954 | 37 mm; 92 × 92 × 14 mm fan. This is a different socket-specific model from the NH-L9i. |
| Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 | AMD AM4 | 37 mm. Intended for compact Ryzen HTPC/SFF systems; confirm the exact CPU against Noctua’s compatibility guidance. |
| Noctua NH-L9a-AM5 | AMD AM5 | 37 mm. The AM5 version is not interchangeable with the AM4 model; check CPU headroom using the compatibility list. |
Noctua describes the L9 footprint as designed to provide memory and PCIe clearance on compatible boards, but that does not guarantee clearance on every motherboard.
47 mm: Thermalright AXP90-X47
The Thermalright AXP90-X47 lists Intel 115X, 1200, 1700 and 1851, plus AMD AM4 and AM5. Its 32 mm heatsink and 15 mm fan make 47 mm overall; Thermalright lists four 6 mm heat pipes and a 310 g weight with fan. It is a candidate when a 37 mm cooler is not the only possible height, provided the case and motherboard clear it.
Rank #2
- Compact, premium-quality low-profile CPU cooler (53mm total height)
- Good adaptability, all metal platform, with back plate fastener, secondary reflow soldering process
- Support for Intel: 115X/1200; AMD: AM4/AM5
- 4×6mm Heatpipes, Noise≤22.4DBA, Voltage 12V, Current 0.2A (MAX)
- Trusted Thermalright CPU cooler quality. Black nickel plating process, corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance, low thermal resistance
53 mm: Thermalright AXP90-X53 BLACK
The Thermalright AXP90-X53 BLACK supports the same listed Intel and AMD socket families as the X47. Its 38 mm heatsink plus 15 mm fan make 53 mm overall; it has four 6 mm heat pipes and weighs 330 g with fan. Select it only if the chassis allows the full installed height and the board layout clears the cooler.
67 mm: Thermalright AXP120-X67
The Thermalright AXP120-X67 lists Intel 115X, 1200, 1700, 1851, 2011/-3 and 2066, and AMD AM4 and AM5. Its 52 mm heatsink and 15 mm fan make 67 mm overall, and it uses six heat pipes. Thermalright specifically advises checking chassis and tall-memory clearance. This is for less restrictive compact cases, not the tightest enclosures.

Rank #3
- Socket compatibility Intel : 1700 / 1200 / 1150 / 1151 / 1155
- Socket compatibility AMD : AM5 / AM4
- Extremely compact design for small form factor systems
- With a height of mere 45mm Pure Rock LP fits in nearly any case
- be quiet! 92mm high-quality fan offers quiet and reliable cooling with max. 30.6dB(A)
How to check fit before ordering
- Identify the exact CPU socket and motherboard. Match them to the exact cooler variant and its official compatibility guidance. Similar model names do not mean the same socket support.
- Check the case’s maximum CPU-cooler height. Compare it with the cooler’s total installed height, including its fan: 37, 47, 53 or 67 mm for the models listed here. Allow room for the side panel and installation rather than relying on the product name alone.
- Inspect the area around the socket. Compare the cooler footprint with RAM modules, motherboard heatsinks, the PCIe slot and nearby headers or connectors. A cooler can satisfy the height limit and still collide with another component. Thermalright specifically calls out tall-memory clearance for the AXP120-X67.
- Confirm CPU suitability, not just socket fit. Look up the exact processor in the cooler maker’s compatibility guidance. Noctua warns that its L9 products are unsuitable for CPUs that create high heat loads.
- Compare cooling and noise data only under comparable conditions. Look for tests using consistent CPU power limits, case airflow, ambient temperature, fan speed and noise-measurement distance. Fan specifications from manufacturers are not measurements of noise or cooling in a complete PC.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The manufacturer pages establish the models’ stated socket support, dimensions and specified features. They do not provide a shared, current performance comparison of these seven coolers. Consequently, there is no evidence here to rank them by temperatures, noise or overall cooling performance. A 2022 Hardware Canucks video describes tests of selected compact coolers at stated 65 W and 95 W loads, but it does not test this exact seven-model set; its description also discloses sponsorship and review-unit sourcing.
Dimensions are useful for ruling out models that cannot physically fit, not for predicting a temperature result. If thermal performance is the deciding factor, use a comparison that discloses the CPU, power limits, case, airflow, ambient temperature, fan settings and noise protocol.
