SEC Consult disclosed three related vulnerabilities in certain Konica Minolta bizhub multifunction printers that could let someone with physical access to the touchscreen use an external USB keyboard to escape the kiosk interface and access the system. The issue was not described as an unauthenticated remote attack. Konica Minolta provided fixes beginning in 2020, but the affected models require different firmware versions, so owners should verify the exact device’s update status.
How the physical-access attack worked
SEC Consult’s testing involved a person who could reach the printer’s touchscreen. By connecting an external USB keyboard, the person could escape the touchscreen’s restricted kiosk interface. Some terminal components used Chromium in kiosk mode; SEC Consult reported that the browser ran with root privileges, enabling access to the underlying operating system and files.
The disclosure described a possible chain of consequences, not evidence that every affected printer was compromised. In a demonstrated scenario, an attacker could alter the touchscreen interface and potentially mislead someone into scanning a document and forwarding it to a server controlled by the attacker. Physical access was part of the tested scenario; the disclosure does not establish that the same attack could be launched remotely without it.
Three related CVEs describe the vulnerability chain
- CVE-2022-29586: the sandbox escape from the kiosk interface.
- CVE-2022-29587: Chromium running with root privileges and the resulting access to the system.
- CVE-2022-29588: administrator passwords stored in clear text in accessible files.
SEC Consult’s advisory and technical blog describe the attack path and findings.

Which printers were affected?
SEC Consult’s advisory lists 46 affected bizhub models, including rebranded devices. The researchers specifically tested the bizhub C3300i and C3350i. The advisory gives a fixed firmware version for each model; for example, it lists G00-7B or later for the C3300i and C3350i. Do not apply that version number to other models: check the full model and firmware list for the exact printer.
How to check and address the risk
- Identify the exact model and installed firmware. Use the printer’s device information or have your service provider confirm it, then compare it with the fixed version listed for that model in SEC Consult’s advisory.
- Confirm the applicable update with Konica Minolta. SEC Consult said the vendor supplied firmware and operating-system patches at the beginning of 2020. It also reported that field deployment took time because updates often required on-site service visits, which were delayed during COVID-19 lockdowns. If you cannot confirm the installed version, contact your Konica Minolta representative or authorized service provider.
- Apply the model-specific fixed firmware. The advisory lists fixed versions separately by model. A generic version number is not a safe substitute for checking the precise entry for your device.
- Use the documented workaround while arranging or verifying the fix. The advisory says to disable external USB keyboard use in the Customer Administrator setting and change the Customer Administrator password. These are workaround steps, not a replacement for the applicable firmware update.
What “hundreds of thousands” means
SEC Consult reported in 2022 that Konica Minolta estimated hundreds of thousands of affected devices were in the field worldwide. This is a historical installed-device estimate attributed to the vendor, not a verified count of printers that remain unpatched today. The available disclosure does not establish how many devices are still vulnerable.
