To get started, build the Monero project’s Docker image, run monerod with a persistent data directory, and choose a mining method. The daemon can solo-mine with your CPU, but the official P2Pool route also needs P2Pool and XMRig; running the daemon container alone does not set up that stack.
Build and run the Monero daemon
The Monero project’s Docker instructions build the image from the repository’s Dockerfile. Run the following commands from the directory containing that Dockerfile, replacing /path/to/bitmonero with a persistent directory on your host:
docker build -t monerod .
mkdir -p /path/to/bitmonero
docker run -d --user "$(id -u):$(id -g)"
-v /path/to/bitmonero:/.bitmonero
-p 127.0.0.1:18080:18080
-p 127.0.0.1:18081:18081
monerod
The host-directory mount keeps blockchain data outside the container, so removing or recreating the container does not by itself erase that data. Choose a host directory with enough available space and keep it mounted at /.bitmonero when you recreate the container.
The port mappings bind both ports to 127.0.0.1, making them available on the host’s local machine rather than binding them to every network interface. The Dockerfile declares ports 18080 and 18081; do not change the host address to a public binding unless you have deliberately considered what services you are exposing and how they will be protected.

Why the daemon uses non-interactive mode
The image’s default arguments include --non-interactive. Monero Docs explains that a foreground monerod normally reads from standard input; in a container without an assigned TTY, that can fail. Non-interactive mode lets the daemon remain in the foreground as the container’s main process without requiring a TTY.
Choose how you want to mine
There are two distinct setups to consider: solo mining directly with monerod, or connecting a node to P2Pool and XMRig. A traditional pool is another option, but it is not the same as the official P2Pool workflow.

| Method | Payout pattern and variance | Trust, privacy, and fees | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo mining | A reward depends on finding a block yourself; the wait can be months depending on hashrate. | Direct, without a pool operator coordinating your mining. | The simplest of these mining paths: use the daemon’s mining feature. |
| Traditional pool | Payouts are generally more frequent than solo rewards. | Relies on a pool operator; fees and centralization are considerations. | Requires a pool connection and its particular settings. |
| P2Pool | Pool-like, more frequent payouts, with the variability inherent in mining. | Peer-to-peer rather than run by a central pool operator. The Monero project page publishes 0% fees, 0 XMR payout fees, and a minimum payout below 0.0004 XMR; these are the page’s stated terms, not a guarantee of future economics. Its overview also notes possible payout-consolidation costs. | Requires a configured Monero node, P2Pool, and XMRig, with their network connections configured. |
Compare payout frequency and variance, reliance on an operator, privacy implications, network complexity, and fees. The Monero project describes P2Pool as a peer-to-peer mining pool that gives miners control over their Monero node and what it mines.
Solo-mine with the daemon
monerod supports CPU mining with a primary Monero wallet address and a thread count. The official daemon reference documents --start-mining <address> and --mining-threads <count>. For a container started with Docker’s image, you can supply these daemon arguments at startup, explicitly including non-interactive mode:

--start-mining YOUR_PRIMARY_WALLET_ADDRESS
--mining-threads THREAD_COUNT
Replace YOUR_PRIMARY_WALLET_ADDRESS with your wallet’s primary address and THREAD_COUNT with the number of CPU threads you intend to use. This starts the daemon’s built-in CPU mining; it does not configure P2Pool or XMRig. The official guidance presents daemon mining mainly for testnet or stagenet coins, experimentation and learning, or miners with vast CPU resources. A typical desktop should not expect regular block rewards: the Monero mining page cautions that a solo miner may wait months for a block, depending on hashrate.
Use P2Pool with XMRig
The official Monero Docs guide describes a three-part arrangement: a configured Monero node, P2Pool, and XMRig. The node provides RPC and ZMQ connectivity; P2Pool uses the primary wallet address, and XMRig connects to P2Pool to do the mining work.

- Use a new wallet for this setup, as the guide recommends: the mining address is public on P2Pool.
- The described setup does not support subaddresses or integrated addresses; use the primary address.
- Plan for node RPC/ZMQ connectivity as well as P2Pool peer connectivity.
The documented commands describe separate software components, not a complete Docker Compose deployment. Container networking and port decisions need to account for the connections between them and P2Pool peers. The upstream Docker example alone does not establish a ready-to-copy, complete multi-container configuration.
Plan storage and assess whether mining suits your hardware
The Monero GUI/CLI solo-mining guide lists 100 GiB of free space for that guide’s setup. It is not a verified universal storage requirement for every Docker deployment. Regardless of that figure, mounting a host directory as shown above is how the Docker example persists the node’s data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMonero can be mined on CPUs and GPUs, but the project’s mining page says GPUs are much less efficient than CPUs. Before dedicating hardware, compare its hashrate and power draw with your electricity cost. A benchmark or hashrate figure alone cannot establish profitability: the outcome also depends on current network conditions, hardware, and local energy costs. Storage speed should not be treated as a way to increase mining rewards.
