One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf a textarea’s text is missing, first check how the field is built: plain HTML puts initial text between the <textarea> tags, while placeholder displays only a hint in an empty field. In React, use defaultValue for an initial uncontrolled value, or pair value with an onChange handler that updates state. A form builder may have its own default-text setting or display issue. The title alone does not identify which cause applies, so use the checks below to narrow it down.
Check the rendered textarea first
Inspect the field in the browser and confirm that it is actually a <textarea>. For plain HTML, initial content belongs between its opening and closing tags:
<textarea>Write your message here</textarea>
By contrast, placeholder is a hint that appears while the control has no value. It does not set the textarea’s initial value. See MDN’s textarea reference for the element’s content and attributes.
For a React textarea, check how its value is managed
React textareas can be uncontrolled, where the browser maintains the current value after the initial render, or controlled, where the application supplies the current value. The correct pattern depends on which should own the field’s value.

| Pattern | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Uncontrolled: defaultValue |
Provides the initial text; the browser handles later edits. | Confirm the initial value is present when the textarea renders. |
Controlled: value plus state |
React supplies the current text from application state. | Make sure an onChange handler updates that state when the user types. Check whether state starts empty or is overwritten during loading or a rerender. |
A controlled field whose state is not updated may fail to behave as an editable field, or may keep displaying an empty value. React’s textarea documentation describes both patterns.
If a form builder creates the field
- Open the field’s settings and confirm that the default text was saved for the correct field.
- Compare the result in the editor with the published page; this helps distinguish a configuration issue from a publishing or display issue.
- Check the product’s version history for a relevant fix. For example, WPForms documented a historical default-text display fix for Paragraph Text fields in its changelog guidance. That example does not establish that WPForms is in use or that the same issue affects a current version.
If the text is still missing
Share the platform or framework, a minimal field snippet or form configuration, and whether the missing text is meant to be a starting value or merely a placeholder. Without those details, the exact cause cannot be identified. If the field is generated by a framework or form builder, inspect its rendered markup and saved configuration rather than assuming the HTML example applies unchanged.
