In Freespire 9.5, the project added a traditional dock and Start menu to its GNOME desktop, with an option to switch back to a more standard GNOME layout. That can ease the first steps for someone used to Windows, but it does not establish Windows application compatibility or prove that Freespire is easier or faster to use.
What “closing the gap” means
The gap described in the May 9, 2023 BetaNews report is about interface familiarity. Freespire 9.5 kept GNOME and added a dock and Start menu—visual and navigational cues many Windows users recognize. The report quotes the Freespire development team as saying: “In this release, we have delivered that. You have your classic “dock” as well as “Start” menu. If you prefer the traditional GNOME 4 layout it’s easy to switch back.”
This is a layout choice, not a Windows mode. A familiar menu does not make Windows programs compatible, and the cited coverage does not report a measured usability or performance advantage. Check whether each application you rely on has a Linux version or another supported way to run it before changing operating systems.
What Freespire includes
The included software differs by release, so the version matters. BetaNews’s May 2023 account of Freespire 9.5 listed OnlyOffice 7.3, Etcher 1.8, Firefox ESR 102, Thunderbird 102, Discover Software Store, Muon Package Manager and Flatpak, alongside kernel 5.19.0-41. These are historical component versions, not current-version claims. BetaNews: Freespire closes the gap between Linux and Windows 10.

PC/OpenSystems announced Freespire 10 on December 7, 2023. That announcement lists a customized GNOME 4.2.9 interface, kernel 6.2.0-36, OnlyOffice 7.4, Brave 1.60, Geary, Rhythmbox, a video player, OpenSSH and Samba. These details describe the announced release and should not be read as a guarantee that those versions remain current. Freespire 10 release announcement.
Freespire 9 and 10: what the project pages establish
The version information deserves caution: the project’s downloads page displays a Freespire 9 ISO, while its separate release announcement documents Freespire 10. The pages do not explain the difference or identify which version is recommended for a new installation. Check the project’s current download page and announcements before installing rather than assuming the newer-numbered announcement is the current recommended release.

Hardware requirements and compatibility checks
The Freespire downloads page gives minimum guidance of an x86_64 Intel or AMD processor, 4 GB RAM and at least 20 GB of storage; it recommends 8 GB RAM. The project’s FAQ says 4 GB RAM and 20 GB storage can support a basic productivity environment, suggests 6–8 GB for emulation software such as VMware or VirtualBox, and at least 8 GB for CAD or video/audio production. These are project recommendations, not a device compatibility guarantee. Freespire downloads and Freespire FAQ.

Freespire versus Linspire
The project describes Freespire as its community distribution, without proprietary codecs, applications or binary-only software in its lineup. Its Freespire 10 announcement also says some vendor-specific drivers are included for hardware compatibility, so “no proprietary software” should not be expanded into a claim that every component is open source.
The project’s FAQ distinguishes commercial Linspire from Freespire: it says Linspire includes proprietary software and codecs, additional facilities for emulation, security and development, and a 12-month support subscription. The release announcement recommends Linspire where proprietary multimedia codec compatibility is required. These are the project’s descriptions; confirm current terms and support details with the project before making a purchase decision. Freespire FAQ and Freespire 10 release announcement.

What the available evidence does not show
The cited sources do not establish a current recommended Freespire version, a support horizon, compatibility for a particular computer, or a quantified comparison with Windows in speed, ease of use or reliability. They also do not report Windows application compatibility, adoption, user satisfaction or installation success. Treat the Windows resemblance as an interface design goal, not proof of equivalent software or a measured transition benefit.
