Yes—on Android, Gemini can place WhatsApp calls and send WhatsApp messages even when Keep Activity is off. That setting does not disconnect WhatsApp. Google says Gemini cannot directly read or summarize WhatsApp chat history, but it can handle message content in notifications through a separate Device assistance connection. To stop the WhatsApp integration, disconnect WhatsApp in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and check the related notification and contacts controls.
What “Keep Activity off” does—and does not do
Google’s Gemini Apps help distinguishes activity handling from app connections. Keep Activity controls how Gemini activity is handled; it is not a master switch for connected apps. Google explicitly says WhatsApp calling and messaging can still work while Keep Activity is off, although some requests that depend on other Google services may not.
For example, Google documents requests such as “Can you call them on WhatsApp?” and “Send a WhatsApp message to [contact name].” The supported claim is limited: Gemini can make calls and send messages through WhatsApp on Android. It does not establish that Gemini can browse every WhatsApp conversation or access a complete chat archive.

Google says Gemini cannot directly read or summarize WhatsApp message history. That limitation matters: calling or messaging through an integration is not the same as opening and searching a user’s full conversation history.

Notifications
Message content may be available by a separate route. Google says Gemini can read or reply to messages in notifications through the Device assistance app. Disconnecting WhatsApp alone therefore may not stop notification-based handling if Device assistance remains connected.
The reviewed documentation does not specify every data field processed for every possible WhatsApp request. It also does not support claims that Gemini has access to all WhatsApp conversations or that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption has been defeated.
How to stop Gemini from using WhatsApp
- Disconnect WhatsApp: Open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and disconnect WhatsApp. This is the control Google identifies for ending the WhatsApp connection. Labels and navigation can change, so check the current settings on your device or Google’s WhatsApp connection help page.
- Review notification access: If you also want to stop Gemini from handling message notifications, review whether Device assistance is connected and turn it off if appropriate.
- Review contacts permission: Google says Gemini may still access device contacts when the Google app has Contacts permission, even after WhatsApp is disconnected. Check the Google app’s Contacts permission in your Android settings if you want to limit that access.
- Choose your activity setting separately: Keep Activity can still matter for activity handling, but turning it off does not itself disable WhatsApp calling or messaging.
Which service handles the data?
Google and WhatsApp describe different responsibilities. Google says WhatsApp handles data it receives to fulfill a Gemini request under WhatsApp’s Privacy Policy. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes Google’s own collection and use, including information from connected apps and device data such as call and message logs and contacts. Google also says some data may be reviewed by human reviewers for stated purposes.
Those broad privacy disclosures should not be collapsed into a single promise about every WhatsApp action. The available documentation does not enumerate all fields used for each request or establish that every item covered by Google’s general disclosures is collected during every WhatsApp interaction.

What Google and critics have said
In an August 13, 2025 post, Google described Temporary Chats and activity controls as providing more data control. Google said Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models, but are retained for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That 72-hour period applies to Temporary Chats, not to all activity data. TechRadar reported on July 8, 2025, that the Android rollout of Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities integrations applied regardless of Gemini Apps Activity status. In that report, a Google spokesperson said: “With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, their Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models.” That is a spokesperson’s statement quoted by TechRadar, not wording from Google’s official help page. TechRadar also reported privacy concerns raised by Tuta about access while activity tracking was off. Check the four separate controls
- Keep Activity: Is Gemini Apps Activity on or off?
- Connected Apps: Is WhatsApp connected to Gemini?
- Device assistance: Can it handle message notifications?
- Contacts permission: Does the Google app have permission to access device contacts?
Reviewing these separately is more useful than treating the activity toggle as a universal privacy switch. The right combination depends on whether you want to stop WhatsApp requests, notification access, contact access, activity handling, or some of these at once.
