If you want Microsoft Edge to use fewer resources while you browse, turn on Sleeping tabs under Settings > System and performance > Performance. Edge does not offer a universal switch that forces every website to lazy-load its content. Sleeping tabs and website lazy loading solve different problems: one pauses idle background tabs; the other delays off-screen page resources until a site needs them.
Turn on Sleeping tabs in Edge

Open Edge and go to Settings > System and performance > Performance. You can also enter
edge://settings/systemin the address bar. -
Turn on Automatically put tabs to sleep.

Under Put inactive tabs to sleep after a set time, choose how long Edge should wait before sleeping an inactive tab. Microsoft lists two hours as the ordinary default; the available choices range from 30 seconds to 12 hours, depending on Edge version and policy configuration.

To keep a site from sleeping, find Always keep these sites active and add the site’s full URL.

On a work or school device, an administrator may control these settings. Microsoft’s Edge performance features guide explains the consumer settings and exclusions.
What Sleeping tabs does—and what it does not do
Sleeping tabs pauses activity in idle background pages so the operating system can reuse some of their resources. Microsoft says it reduces CPU, battery, and memory use; it does not promise a quantified improvement in how quickly pages load. A sleeping tab resumes when you select it, with its page state available.
That differs from a discarded tab. Discarding releases the page contents from memory, so returning to the tab requires a full reload. Microsoft describes Sleeping tabs as reducing CPU use to a minimum and freeing some memory, while a discarded tab makes more memory available by unloading the page. Why a tab may stay active
Edge uses heuristics to avoid sleeping tabs that appear to be doing useful background work. Pages may remain active when they display notifications, play audio, or stream video. Microsoft also lists other cases, including active pages, some pages sharing a browsing instance, intranet pages, pages open in DevTools, screen or media capture, casting, and WebUSB activity.

Stronger Energy saver behavior can make some activity less smooth; Microsoft gives video playback as an example. Actual effects depend on the device, running apps, and browsing habits.
What “lazy loading” means on websites
Website lazy loading is a web-development technique, not the same as Sleeping tabs. A site can defer fetching off-screen images, frames, or media until they are near the visible part of the page. This can reduce initial data loading and may improve page-load performance, depending on the implementation and page content.

In its Edge 148 web platform release notes, dated May 7, 2026, Microsoft documents support for the HTML loading="lazy" attribute on <video> and <audio> elements, alongside existing lazy-loading behavior for <img> and <iframe>. That is a capability for website authors to implement, not a browser setting that makes sites lazy-load when they have not implemented it.
For developers, deferring resources that are initially off-screen can avoid unnecessary early downloads. But delaying essential content that appears immediately can harm the initial experience; lazy loading should match when the content is actually needed.

Sort by CPU or Memory and identify whether a tab, extension, subframe, or utility process is responsible.

Temporarily disable extensions. If usage drops, turn them back on one at a time to find the cause.

Check whether background apps are continuing to run after you close Edge windows.
