Icaros can add thumbnails and media details to Windows File Explorer for a wide range of video formats, including MOV, MKV, AVI and MP4. It is a shell extension, not a video player. Support is broad, but a format may need to be enabled in IcarosConfig before Explorer will show its thumbnails.

What Icaros does—and what “almost any video type” means

Icaros is a collection of Windows shell extensions that supplies video thumbnails and media properties such as duration, dimensions, title and audio channels in File Explorer. It supports media formats handled by FFmpeg, with examples including MKV, FLV, AVI, MP4, MOV, RMVB, M2TS and OGM. It also has custom parsers for cover-art thumbnails in selected formats. See the Icaros project documentation for its feature and format details.

“Almost any” is not a guarantee that every file will work automatically. Icaros registers common thumbnail file types by default; other extensions may need to be added, and a file still needs to be readable by the relevant parser. The project lists support through Windows 11. Its Windows XP note applies only to Icaros 3.0.3 and earlier, and describes thumbnail-only support with additional caveats.

Install and activate Icaros

  1. Download Icaros from the official project page and install it. The project says Icaros has no dependencies on its documented supported systems. IcarosConfig requires .NET Framework 4; the installer is expected to install it automatically if needed.
  2. Open IcarosConfig with administrative privileges.
  3. Activate the Thumbnailing component. Icaros must be activated before its shell extension can supply thumbnails.
  4. In File Explorer, use a view that displays thumbnails, such as Medium, Large or Extra large icons. If thumbnails are still missing, check the extension and file using the steps below.

Enable or test a particular file extension

If one type of video has no thumbnail while another works, check IcarosConfig rather than assuming the file is unsupported.

  1. Open IcarosConfig and confirm that Thumbnailing is active.
  2. Find the Thumbnail Filetypes list and check whether the file’s extension is included. Extensions can be entered as a semicolon-separated list.
  3. Drag a sample file onto the Thumbnailing page in IcarosConfig to test whether Icaros can process it.
  4. If the test succeeds, add the extension to the file-type list if it is not already there. If it fails, the file may not be supported or readable by the applicable parser.

Icaros can restore a previous shell extension when you deactivate Icaros or remove a file type from its list. This is useful if another program previously handled thumbnails for that extension.

Adjust which frame or image appears

Icaros lets you tune thumbnail selection in IcarosConfig. You can choose a timestamp or percentage offset for the video frame; if the chosen timestamp fails, Icaros falls back to the percentage offset. Black- and white-frame detection can skip frames considered too dark or too light. Raising the detection threshold may slow thumbnail generation.

Understand Icaros’ cache and Explorer’s cache

Icaros has an optional cache that keeps thumbnail copies so it can regenerate them if Windows deletes Explorer’s thumbnail cache. Its modes are:

  • Disabled: Icaros does not use its optional cache.
  • Static: Icaros uses existing cache entries but does not add new thumbnails to the cache.
  • Dynamic: Icaros can add newly generated thumbnails to its cache.

This cache does not replace Explorer’s own work. Explorer still validates, crops and decorates each thumbnail and adds it to the Windows cache, so a small delay can remain even when Icaros has a cached copy.

Install Icaros alone or through K-Lite?

A Microsoft-hosted community answer notes that Icaros shell extensions are included in K-Lite Codec Pack and suggests installing Icaros alone if the only goal is Explorer thumbnails. That is community guidance, not an official Microsoft recommendation; the answer does not establish that every K-Lite edition or future release contains the same components. Choose the standalone route if you only need Icaros’ Explorer features, or consider a codec pack if you also want its other components. In either case, verify that the extension you need is supported and enabled. The community answer is on Microsoft Q&A.
