“Supermicro SAS3 HBA” most likely refers to the AOC-S3008L-L8e: an internal eight-port, 12Gb/s-per-port SAS host bus adapter built around the Broadcom 3008 controller. It has two SFF-8643 connectors and operates in IT/HBA mode, not RAID mode. Supermicro says the standard card is compatible with Supermicro systems only, so confirm your card’s label and revision, motherboard, PCIe slot, chassis, and backplane before buying or installing it.

What the Supermicro AOC-S3008L-L8e provides

Supermicro’s specifications describe the AOC-S3008L-L8e as an internal SAS HBA for connecting SAS or SATA storage. The card uses a Broadcom 3008 controller and has two internal SFF-8643 Mini-SAS HD connectors. Supermicro rates each port at up to 12Gb/s and specifies support for up to 122 devices in HBA mode. These are vendor specifications, not independent throughput measurements. Supermicro AOC-S3008L-L8e product page.

“SAS3 HBA” is not a unique model name. Check the model and revision printed on the card itself rather than assuming every Supermicro SAS3 adapter has the L8e’s ports, firmware, or operating mode.

Is the L8e a RAID controller?

No. The L8e is an IT/HBA-only card. Supermicro technical support says it cannot use IR firmware: “The answer is no , this AOC-S3008L-L8E is only IT mode (just an HBA) no RAID”. Supermicro FAQ 35521.

Supermicro lists the related AOC-S3008L-L8i separately, with RAID 0, 1, and 10 among its features. The L8i is a distinct model; the L8e cannot be converted into it by flashing firmware. See the Supermicro storage-card catalog.

Check system compatibility before installing

Supermicro’s product page states that the standard AOC-S3008L-L8e is compatible with Supermicro systems only. Its older user guide describes plug-and-play support on X9, X10, and X11 motherboards with a standard PCIe x8 slot. That guide is not proof of compatibility with every board or later configuration; check the current manual for your exact motherboard and card. AOC-S3008L-L8e user guide.

  • Motherboard and slot: Verify the board model and that the chosen slot is suitable for the card. A physical x8-length slot alone does not establish that the system supports the adapter.
  • Chassis and backplane: Confirm the backplane’s connectors and how it is wired. The card’s two internal SFF-8643 connectors require compatible internal cabling.
  • Drive topology: Check whether the backplane connects drives directly or through an expander, and whether the planned device count fits that topology. The vendor’s figure of up to 122 devices is a specification for HBA mode, not a guarantee that every chassis can connect that many drives.
  • Card identity: Read the exact model and revision label. Do not assume specifications or firmware for a similarly named card apply to yours.

Choose the right cable for the backplane

The L8e’s two internal SFF-8643 ports use Mini-SAS HD cabling. Supermicro lists internal cable options on its product page, but the suitable cable depends on the chassis, backplane connector, length, and routing. Match both ends of the cable to the card and backplane before ordering; the connector count alone does not establish that a particular cable will fit.

Firmware and card revisions

For AOC-S3008L-L8e firmware, Supermicro’s FAQ directs users to its Broadcom 3008 firmware directory. Choose a package for the exact card and check its documentation and compatibility notes rather than relying on a version number found elsewhere.

When to consider another adapter

Choose based on the job, not just the SAS generation or port count. If you need the RAID modes Supermicro lists, investigate the L8i as a separate model. If you need an HBA for software-managed storage, the L8e’s IT/HBA-only operation may fit, provided the host and cabling are compatible. For any alternative, compare operating mode, internal or external connectors, port count, host support, drive topology, and firmware path.
