Geekbench 6 results reported in December 2024 showed the MediaTek MT8196 development platform scoring 24% higher in single-core and 30% higher in multi-core testing than an earlier run. Those are changes between two reported tests—not proof of how a finished MT8196 Chromebook will perform. A later Geekbench Browser entry lists a multi-core score of 7,925, but it is a single submitted result and cannot establish a representative performance level.

What changed between the 2024 benchmark runs?

Chrome Unboxed reported Geekbench 6 results for an MT8196 development platform tested on September 13 and November 25, 2024. The later run was 24% higher in single-core and 30% higher in multi-core performance, according to the publication. Its test context was Rauru and its derivative baseboard Navi.

The report’s illustrations do not provide readable absolute scores in the available text, so the relative increases are the figures that can be cited. The report does not establish why the results changed. It is not a controlled comparison between two retail Chromebooks, nor does it show that every MT8196 device will produce the same gains. Read the December 10, 2024 Chrome Unboxed report.

What does the later 7,925 score mean?

A Geekbench Browser result uploaded September 8, 2026 identifies “Google rauru” and MediaTek MT8196, and reports a multi-core score of 7,925. That is one submitted benchmark entry. The listing does not provide enough context to treat it as a typical result or make a reliable comparison with the two 2024 runs, commercial laptops, or other processors.

Is MT8196 a Chromebook chip?

The development evidence points to Chromebook hardware: a ChromiumOS reference describes Acer Chromebook Rauru/Hylia devices as using MT8196. That supports the connection between the chip and Chromebook development, but it does not confirm that a finished MT8196 Chromebook is on sale. The available reference is the ChromiumOS Rauru board-overlay entry.

The 2024 report discussed Chromebook use and expectations around Chromebook Plus, but it did not verify a retail launch. The sources available do not establish a current product name, configuration, price, or retail availability, so the benchmark evidence alone is not a basis for a purchase recommendation.

What is reported about the MT8196’s hardware?

A January 2025 secondary report describes the chip as having four Cortex-A720 cores, three Cortex-X4 cores, and one Cortex-X925 core. It also discusses Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 8K60 capture. These details should be treated as that report’s account, not as a confirmed official MT8196 specification sheet; the article compares the chip with Dimensity 9400 and signals that some shared-feature claims are assumptions.

How to interpret the benchmark claims

  • Two 2024 runs: Chrome Unboxed reported relative increases of 24% single-core and 30% multi-core between its September and November tests.
  • One later result: Geekbench Browser lists a 7,925 multi-core score for a Google Rauru entry uploaded in September 2026.
  • Development, not retail proof: Rauru/Hylia references link MT8196 to Chromebook engineering, but do not establish a currently available consumer model.
  • No product ranking: These results do not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison against retail Chromebooks or commercial laptops.
