Facebook restored Mathew Roberts’s satirical “Storm Area 51” event in 2019 after briefly removing it for an alleged Community Standards violation. A Facebook spokesperson described the removal as a mistake, according to a contemporaneous report by Futurism. This is a historical account, not a notice that the event is active today.
Why Facebook removed and restored the event
Futurism reported on August 8, 2019, that Roberts received a message saying the event broke Facebook’s Community Standards. Facebook later restored the page. A spokesperson characterized the removal as a mistake, as reported by Futurism, which cited the BBC for the explanation.
The report describes a moderation error; it gives no basis for interpreting the restoration as anything beyond Facebook putting the event page back after it had been removed.
What the ‘Storm Area 51’ event was
Roberts’s Facebook event invited people to storm the U.S. Air Force installation in Nevada. Its description, quoted by Futurism, was: “Let’s see them aliens.” The language was satirical and meme-oriented, not an authorized invitation to visit the installation or a claim that participants could enter it.

How many people had joined
Futurism reported that more than 2 million Facebook users had joined before the event was removed. That is a figure reported in 2019, not a current attendance count; Futurism linked it to CNET, whose original report was not independently reviewed for this account.
What the report said about merchandise
Futurism also said the event description linked to official Storm Area 51 merchandise. Its 2019 report does not establish whether that store still operates, whether any items currently offered are authorized, or whether a particular listing is genuine.
