To stop unwanted Chrome alerts, change the site’s Notifications permission—not just its pop-up setting. On desktop, review permissions from the site-information icon or Chrome’s Site settings. On Android, use Chrome’s Site settings or the page’s Permissions menu. Chrome’s Safety Check can also review notification permissions it removed from sites you have not visited recently.

Why notifications continue after you block pop-ups

Chrome treats website notifications and pop-ups as separate permissions. A site may still send notifications you previously allowed even when Chrome blocks its pop-ups. To stop those alerts, change the site’s Notifications permission; changing only Pop-ups and redirects does not cancel a notification subscription. See Google’s guidance on blocking or allowing pop-ups in Chrome.

Change notification permissions on desktop

Block or allow the site you are visiting

  1. Open Chrome and visit the website sending notifications.
  2. Select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Find Notifications and change the permission. Choose the option that blocks alerts to stop them, or allow notifications if you want them back.

Review permissions across sites

  1. In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu), then open Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security > Site settings.
  3. Review the notification permissions listed there and change the setting for any site you no longer want to hear from.

Google documents these desktop controls in its Chrome notification settings.

Manage notifications on Android

Turn website notifications on or off, or make requests quieter

  1. Open Chrome and tap More > Settings > Site settings > Notifications.
  2. Use the global control to turn website notifications on or off.
  3. To reduce interruptions while keeping requests available, enable Use quieter messaging. Permission requests then appear below the address bar instead of interrupting the page.

Change permission for one site

  1. In Chrome, visit the site whose alerts you want to change.
  2. Tap Page info > Permissions.
  3. Change Notifications for that site.

These Android controls are described in Google’s Chrome help.

Review permissions Chrome removed with Safety Check

Chrome may remove notification permissions from sites you have not visited recently, and Safe Browsing may remove permissions from sites it identifies as using deceptive notification prompts. To review those changes, open Chrome’s Safety Check and look for Permissions removed for [n] sites. Review the listed sites; choose Undo if you want to restore a permission, or accept the change. See Google’s Safety Check guidance.

Stop spam alerts and handle notifications flagged as unsafe

If Chrome displays a warning on a notification, choose Unsubscribe to stop future alerts. On Android, you can also choose Report spam to Chrome. Google says reporting sends the notification content and site URL to Google to improve spam protection.
