Hello Robot’s Stretch RE1 is a compact mobile-manipulation research robot introduced in 2020 by a startup co-founded by former Google robotics director Aaron Edsinger and Georgia Tech professor Charlie Kemp. Its defining idea is simple: move the wheeled base to position the robot, then use a lightweight telescoping arm to reach and grasp objects. The launch demonstrations showed promising research capabilities, not a proven autonomous household helper or a widely available consumer product.
What is the Stretch robot?
Stretch RE1 was designed as a smaller, lighter and less mechanically complex alternative to large research robots such as the PR2. Hello Robot’s founders were interested in mobile manipulation in homes and around people, with longer-term ambitions in home and healthcare settings, including potential help for older adults and caregivers.
In an IEEE Spectrum feature published July 14, 2020, Edsinger described being frustrated by the complexity of robots built for manipulation in home environments. He said: “I’d become frustrated with the complexity of the robots being built to do manipulation in home environments and around people, and it solved a lot of problems in an elegant way.”
Kemp said the team wanted to test robots with people in real homes: “Right from the beginning, we were trying to take our robots out to real homes and interact with real people.” These statements describe the founders’ motivation and direction, not proof that Stretch had become a consumer home robot.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How does Stretch’s telescoping arm work?
Rather than relying on a long, multi-jointed arm to cover a broad workspace, Stretch uses its wheeled base to move horizontally and a telescoping arm to extend toward objects. The 2020 feature describes five carbon-fiber arm links: one fixed link and four moving links, driven by a single motor. This arrangement helped keep the robot’s mass and mechanical complexity down, but the article also notes a trade-off: the design is less suited to fine manipulation.
For navigation, manipulation and 3D mapping, the feature identifies an Intel RealSense D435i depth camera mounted on a pan-tilt head as the principal sensor. The robot’s base, camera and arm work together: the base gets it into position, the camera observes the surroundings and target, and the arm reaches out to interact.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What could Stretch do in the launch demonstrations?
The demonstrations reported by IEEE Spectrum included teleoperation, grasping objects from a surface, mapping and navigating around a space, reaching a 3D target, and handing an object to a person. The article also discusses behaviors using camera observations and planning software, including FUNMAP (Fast Unified Navigation, Manipulation and Planning). Much of the software was open source at the time of publication.
These demonstrations should not be read as evidence of reliable, unsupervised household autonomy. The feature presents Stretch as a research platform and describes professional supervision in prospective deployments. It does not establish that the robot could independently perform a routine set of household chores in ordinary homes.

What were Stretch RE1’s launch-era size, reach and price?
The following figures were reported for Stretch RE1’s 2020 introduction. They are historical launch-era claims from the IEEE Spectrum feature, not verified current specifications or a current price.
| Measure | 2020 launch-era figure |
|---|---|
| Weight | 23 kg (reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2020) |
| Footprint | 34 cm square (reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2020) |
| Arm reach | Over half a meter (reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2020) |
| Payload | Up to 1.5 kg (reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2020) |
| Price | $17,950 per unit (reported by IEEE Spectrum in 2020) |
The compact footprint and reported weight were intended to make the platform easier to move and use around people than much larger research robots. University of Washington robotics professor Maya Cakmak, quoted in the article, said: “It’s safe and lightweight, you can probably put it in the backseat of a car.” That is her assessment in the feature, not an independent safety certification.

Can Stretch do household chores?
The 2020 article shows research demonstrations involving object grasping, navigation, reaching and handover, and describes ambitions for future use in homes and healthcare. It does not establish Stretch as a generally available autonomous housework service. Edsinger said, “The impact we want to have is through robots that are helpful to people in society.” Kemp described a longer-term aspiration: “Rather than creating a specialized assistive device, we want to eventually create an inexpensive consumer device for everyone that does lots of things.” The latter is a goal, not evidence of a current consumer product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What inspired the gripper design?
The article reports that Kemp examined highly rated assistive grabbers sold on Amazon, bought several and tested them while exploring a gripper design for Stretch. It does not name the chosen grabber by brand or model. A category-level search such as long-reach assistive grabber reflects that design inspiration only; it does not identify a compatible Stretch accessory or suggest that a consumer grabber can perform the robot’s functions.
