The collection was announced on April 27, 2016. Its original access instructions are historical, however, and it has not been verified whether those images or the same Maps interface remain available today.
What the Sydney Opera House Street View collection included
Google described a set of 360-degree panoramas covering the Opera House and nearby waterfront. The launch was part of Google Maps Street View, so the emphasis was on looking around the surroundings rather than watching a live view or performance. Google’s April 27, 2016 announcement outlined three parts of the experience:
- Exterior and harbour: panoramic views around the Opera House, the harbour and Circular Quay.
- Performance spaces: a view from the Concert Hall stage and a behind-the-scenes view of the Joan Sutherland Theatre stage.
- Digital cultural exhibits: a separate online experience with exhibits about the Opera House, described in Google’s Digital Stage announcement.
The interior material was selective, not a claim that every room or backstage area was open to virtual viewing.
How Google said to open the imagery in 2016
At launch, Google instructed mobile users to search for “Sydney Opera House” in Google Maps and select the Street View option. That instruction applied to the mobile app for Android and iOS in 2016; it is not confirmation of the current app’s labels or availability. Google’s announcement does not establish whether the original collection can still be opened.

If you want to check Maps now, search for the venue and look for Street View imagery or photo spheres associated with the location. Availability and interface options may differ from the 2016 launch, so the original directions should not be treated as current step-by-step guidance.
Street View and the Opera House’s cultural collection
Street View’s panoramas offered a way to look around the site, while Google’s Digital Stage material was a distinct collection of online exhibits. For further context, Google Arts & Culture presents the Opera House’s heritage and design through Art, Colour and Performance. The Opera House’s archive has additional material at Sydney Opera House archive, and a lecture by Professor Paulo Tombesi explores the construction of the sails at The Construction of the Sails.
