Its “crayon-like” ink was made of solid sticks loaded into the machine—not crayons or liquid-ink cartridges. Xerox’s launch specifications, prices and environmental claims describe the product as presented in 2009, not its current availability or performance.
What was the Xerox ColorQube 9200?
The ColorQube 9200 was a three-model family of office multifunction printers: the 9201, 9202 and 9203. Each combined printing, scanning and copying. Xerox positioned the series as a higher-volume, faster version of solid-ink technology it said had already been used in its desktop printers for more than a decade.
At launch, Xerox listed print speeds ranging from 38 to 85 pages per minute across the three models. The company said each machine had four print heads and could deliver more than 150 million ink drops per second. These are Xerox’s launch specifications, not independent test results. Xerox’s May 2009 announcement introduced the series; its 2009 Form 10-K identifies the 9201, 9202 and 9203 models.
How does a printer use crayon-like ink?
The machine used purpose-made solid ink sticks. Users dropped the sticks into the printer, where the system melted and delivered ink through its print heads onto the page. The sticks were not ordinary crayons and were not drawn directly onto paper. Xerox said users could load sticks while printing, and described the system as cartridge-free.

- Solid Ink
The phrase “crayon-like” described the sticks’ solid form. It did not mean that the printer used conventional crayons or liquid ink cartridges.
How did ColorQube’s Hybrid Color pricing work?
Xerox’s launch offered a Hybrid Color plan that charged according to the amount of color coverage on a page, rather than treating every color page alike. The company illustrated the plan with these historical US examples:
Rank #2
- PAGE YIELD: 1500 pages
- UNMATCHED IMAGE QUALITY: From the very first page to the very last, you’ll get consistently outstanding image output – sharp fine lines, crisp text, smooth gradations and brilliant colors
- TECHNOLOGY AT ITS FINEST: The Xerox toner formulation is customized for your specific printer model to optimize its capabilities and maximize print quality and performance
- HIGH PERFORMANCE: Xerox Genuine Toner Cartridges are tailor made for Xerox printers to enable them to work at their best page after page. There’s nothing better for your printer
- 75 YEARS of RESEARCH: With thousands of patents, the proprietary Xerox toner technology enables your printer to warm up faster and be ready to work, run cleaner (less dust) and produce outstanding prints
| Color coverage example | Per-page charge in Xerox’s 2009 launch examples |
|---|---|
| Small logo or light color | 1 cent |
| Moderate color | 3 cents |
| Heavy color | 8 cents |
Xerox also claimed color-page costs could be up to 62 percent lower than those of traditional color laser printers. Both the percentage and the per-page examples were Xerox’s launch-era claims. They are not current prices or a reliable estimate of today’s running costs, which depend on supplies, service terms and actual print use.
What did Xerox claim about waste and environmental impact?
Xerox said the ColorQube produced 90 percent less supplies waste. It also reported an estimate—reviewed by the Rochester Institute of Technology—of 9 percent less lifecycle energy use and 10 percent fewer greenhouse gases than a comparable laser device. Those figures were presented by Xerox in 2009; they should be read as company-reported claims about a stated comparator, not as universal results or independent verification of every user’s experience.

What did the printer cost at launch?
Xerox said the ColorQube 9200 Series list price started at $23,500. The company began taking orders in North America and planned European availability in September 2009, followed by other markets in 2010. These are historical launch details, not current retail prices or evidence that the models remain available.
What did Xerox and a beta customer say?
In the May 2009 announcement, then-Xerox president Ursula Burns said customers were “looking for ways to achieve more with less” and that ColorQube aimed to take the cost barrier out of color printing. Cliff Lee, IT operations manager at Technip USA, described the opportunity to reduce costs and improve sustainability. Lee was a ColorQube beta customer; his comments were a customer testimonial, not independent product testing.

Is the ColorQube 9200 still available?
Current support status, compatible ink-stick part numbers, stock and resale prices are not established here. Anyone considering a used 9200-series machine should verify the exact model, compatible consumables, service options and local availability with Xerox or a qualified seller before buying. Xerox later announced different ColorQube products: the 8570 and 8870 desktop printers in 2010, and the 9300 Series multifunction printers in 2011. Those are separate product announcements, not variants of the 9200 launch. Xerox’s 2010 announcement covers the desktop models, and its 2011 announcement covers the 9300 Series.
