To send a WhatsApp voice message, open an individual or group chat, tap or click the microphone, and speak. You can pause to preview the draft, resume recording, or cancel before sending. After a message arrives, you can replay it, seek through its waveform, change playback speed, or use a transcript when the feature is available.
How to record and send a WhatsApp voice message
WhatsApp calls audio recordings in chats “voice messages.” They work in both individual and group chats. Open the conversation, select the microphone, and begin speaking. WhatsApp’s Help Center instructions describe the recording controls, though button placement and labels can vary between app versions and devices.
- Open the individual or group chat where you want to send the recording.
- Tap or click the microphone and speak.
- To check what you have recorded, pause the recording. Listen to the draft before sending.
- To continue, select the microphone again and resume recording. To discard the recording, use the cancel control.
- Send the message when you are satisfied with the recording.
After sending, WhatsApp uses gray and blue microphone indicators to show whether recipients have played the voice message, according to its Help Center.
How to preview, pause, and resume a recording
Pausing lets you listen to a voice-message draft before it goes to the chat. You can then resume recording or cancel instead of sending it. These controls were among the features Meta described in its March 30, 2022 announcement, which also covered waveform visualization and playback outside the chat.

How to listen, seek, and change playback speed
Received voice messages download automatically, according to WhatsApp’s Help Center. Play one through your device’s speakers or connected headphones. For a long recording, use the waveform to move to a different point, or increase playback speed from 1x to 1.5x or 2x. Playback can continue while you navigate to another chat. WhatsApp’s 2022 announcement also described remembering playback position and faster playback for forwarded voice messages. Available controls may differ as WhatsApp updates its apps.
How to transcribe a voice message
WhatsApp announced voice-message transcription on November 21, 2024. Transcripts are generated on the device, and language availability depends on the feature’s rollout; the announcement said it began with selected languages, with more planned. The setting path given by WhatsApp is Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts. Once enabled, long-press a voice message and tap Transcribe. A transcript is useful when listening is impractical, while playback speed and waveform seeking help when you want to hear the recording itself.

How View Once voice messages work
A View Once voice message is designed to disappear after its recipient listens once. Meta announced the feature on December 7, 2023; it displays a one-time icon and is protected by end-to-end encryption by default. See Meta’s View Once announcement.
The Help Center says you must choose View Once each time you send one. The recipient must open it within 14 days. A View Once voice message cannot be forwarded, copied, saved, starred, or shared. These restrictions do not prevent someone from recording playback with another device. WhatsApp also says that if a recipient reports the media, it may be provided to WhatsApp. Check the Help Center’s View Once guidance for current details.

Can you use headphones with WhatsApp voice messages?
Yes. WhatsApp documents playback through connected headphones as well as computer speakers. For recording, the device needs microphone input; a headphone set with a microphone can provide both listening and recording hardware when compatible with your phone or computer. WhatsApp’s Help Center does not specify a particular connector or headphone model.
How commonly are voice messages used?
Meta reported that, as of March 30, 2022, “7 billion voice messages are sent daily on average” on WhatsApp. That is Meta’s published global average from 2022, not a current usage count.
