ColorFabb varioShore is a TPU filament designed to produce prints with different levels of softness by changing print settings. MatterHackers says its material foams more at higher temperatures and adjusted flow, while printing in a lower-temperature range can avoid foaming. Those are product-page recommendations—not a guarantee that every printer or model will behave identically.
What is varioShore filament?
varioShore is a flexible TPU filament. MatterHackers lists its base TPU hardness as 92A, but that figure describes the base material; it does not specify the hardness of every finished print. Its product page describes the filament as foaming under certain temperature and flow conditions, changing the printed material’s expansion, density, and softness. MatterHackers’ varioShore TPU product page gives its specifications and printing guidance.
How do you make a print softer?
According to MatterHackers, temperature and material throughput affect how much the filament foams. Its page says foaming is activated at 200–250°C with 60–70% flow, while 190–200°C can be used to print without foaming. Treat these as seller-provided guidance for this product, not universal settings: the result can depend on the printer and the part being printed.
In general, the product’s advertised approach is to tune the print rather than choose a different base filament for each softness. More foaming produces a more expanded, lower-density result; less foaming produces a denser result. The page does not provide a chart mapping particular settings to a specific finished Shore hardness, so do not assume that a temperature or flow value corresponds to a guaranteed softness.

What settings does MatterHackers recommend?
The retailer lists these ranges for varioShore TPU. They are product guidance, not a profile independently validated on every printer.
| Setting | MatterHackers listing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature | 190–250°C | The page associates 200–250°C with foaming at 60–70% flow and 190–200°C with printing without foaming. |
| Print speed | 20–30 mm/s | A recommended range on the product page. |
| Bed temperature | 20–40°C | A recommended range on the product page. |
| Flow for foaming | 60–70% | The listed flow range for activating foaming; it is not a universal value for other filaments. |
MatterHackers also advises using less cooling when aiming for maximum foaming and more cooling when overhang performance matters more. It cautions against placing the nozzle too close to the print surface, particularly when the material is foaming. Check the current product instructions and your printer’s temperature limits before printing.

Can your printer feed flexible filament?
Flexible filament can be harder to feed reliably on some printers. Make:’s 2023 description of a Lost In Tech video says varioShore may be more rigid as it enters the extruder, which could ease some feeding difficulties associated with flexible filament. That is a possibility described by Make:, not proof of compatibility with every extruder or printer.
If feeding is unreliable, do not assume that changing temperature alone will solve it. Printer design and filament path matter, and the sources do not establish a compatibility list or tested profile for particular machines. Start with the filament maker’s current guidance and your printer’s operating limits.

What can varioShore be used for?
MatterHackers names soft sporting goods such as bicycle grips or handlebars and footwear parts such as shoe insoles as possible applications. These examples describe intended uses; they do not establish that a print is suitable for safety-critical, load-bearing, medical, or commercial use. For a functional part, test the finished print under the conditions it will face.

MatterHackers lists a 0.70 kg spool, a filament diameter tolerance of ±0.1 mm, and a material density of 1.2–1.3 g/cm³. These are product-page specifications, not independent study results. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of finished-part softness across settings, a printer-by-printer compatibility test, or a published study statistic about performance.
