To stop WhatsApp from automatically downloading images, open Settings → Storage and data and change the media auto-download choices for mobile data, Wi-Fi, and roaming. This only controls WhatsApp’s automatic downloads: it does not prevent you from downloading an image manually, and it is not a phone-wide switch for every app. If your goal is to keep WhatsApp pictures out of your photo gallery, change the separate gallery or save-to-phone setting.
Choose what you want to stop
“Stop images downloading” can mean preventing an app from fetching incoming pictures automatically, or preventing pictures from appearing in the phone’s photo gallery. Those are different settings. The controls described here are WhatsApp-specific; the available evidence does not establish a universal iPhone or Android setting that blocks image downloads across all apps.
- Stop automatic downloads: Change WhatsApp’s media auto-download settings. You can still choose to download an individual image manually.
- Keep media out of the gallery: Change WhatsApp’s separate save-to-phone or gallery visibility setting. This does not necessarily stop the media from being stored on the device.
Turn off WhatsApp automatic image downloads
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Storage and data.
- Under media auto-download, open each connection type: When using mobile data, When connected on Wi-Fi, and When roaming.
- For each connection type, turn off Photos (and any other media categories you do not want downloaded automatically), then confirm or save the selection if prompted.
WhatsApp separates these choices by connection type, so turning off photos for mobile data alone does not turn them off for Wi-Fi or roaming. The setting controls automatic downloading; WhatsApp still allows users to manually download media. Menu labels can vary by app version, operating system, and language. WhatsApp’s media auto-download guidance describes the setting.
Stop WhatsApp pictures appearing in your gallery
If images are already arriving but you do not want them displayed alongside camera photos, change WhatsApp’s separate save-to-phone or gallery visibility control. This is not the same as disabling auto-download. WhatsApp says that on Android, media is stored in a WhatsApp media folder, so hiding it from the gallery should not be taken to mean that the files were never downloaded or stored on the device. See WhatsApp’s guidance on stopping media from being saved to your phone for platform-specific directions.

What Strict Account Settings change
Meta announced WhatsApp Strict Account Settings on January 27, 2026, describing it as a lockdown-style option that automatically blocks attachments and media from unknown senders, silences calls from people users do not know, and restricts other settings. Meta said rollout would happen over the following weeks, so check WhatsApp to see whether the option is available to you. It is a security control focused on unknown senders, not a replacement for the ordinary auto-download settings that govern incoming media generally. Meta’s January 27, 2026 announcement gives the feature description.
