Android’s reported Screen time reminders offer a useful middle ground: they can show how long you have spent in a selected app without forcing you to stop using it. That gentle approach is what makes the feature appealing to anyone who wants more awareness of their screen habits without an abrupt lockout.
What Android Screen time reminders do
Android Authority reported in November 2024 that Google was rolling out Screen time reminders to some users. The feature displays a pill-shaped notification at the top of the screen showing time spent in a selected app. It is meant to prompt you to consider closing the app, not to block access when a limit is reached. Android Authority’s report describes the rollout, but does not establish that the option is available on every Android phone.
There is no published effectiveness or adoption figure for Screen time reminders in the cited sources. The feature’s value is its lower-friction design: it makes time visible while leaving the decision to you.
How to look for Screen time reminders
Because availability varies, treat this as a reported route rather than a guaranteed menu path:

- Open Settings and search for Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Open that section and look for Screen time reminders.
- If the option appears, open it, turn on Use reminders, and select the apps for which you want a nudge.
If you cannot find the setting, your device may not expose it. Google’s general Digital Wellbeing help page notes that steps can vary by device, and it does not currently document Screen time reminders. The Google Play listing for Digital Wellbeing describes other tools but does not mention this feature either. Neither source establishes current availability across manufacturers, Android versions, regions, or app versions.
How reminders differ from Android’s other wellbeing tools
Digital Wellbeing includes several controls, but they do different jobs. Choose based on whether you want a prompt, a daily cap, or a temporary pause.

These distinctions follow Google’s Digital Wellbeing guidance. The controls do not share an identical trigger: reminders are described as an in-the-moment nudge, app timers use a daily budget, and Focus mode pauses chosen apps during a distraction break.

- Choose Screen time reminders if you want a gentle cue while using particular apps and prefer to decide for yourself whether to stop.
- Choose an app timer if you want a firm daily limit for an app and are comfortable with it closing when the allowance runs out.
- Choose Focus mode if you want selected apps and their notifications paused for a period, including on a schedule.
- Use the Screen time widget if you mainly want a quick view of which apps take the most time, rather than an interruption.
Google’s 2018 Android post discussed earlier app limits, not the newer named reminders feature. It quoted Glen Murphy, Google’s director of UX: “When you’re close to the limit, you’ll get a nudge reminding you, and when time is up you won’t be able to use the app anymore (unless you cheat!).” That description concerns app limits, so it should not be read as evidence that Screen time reminders lock an app. Google’s 2018 post provides that historical context.
