Yes—if your WordPress site had Post SMTP version 3.6.0 or earlier installed, it was affected by a critical flaw that could let an unauthenticated attacker read email logs and use an administrator password-reset link to take over the site. Update Post SMTP to version 3.6.1 or a newer supported release. The flaw was actively exploited in November 2025, so sites that ran an affected version should also be checked for signs of compromise.

What was the Post SMTP vulnerability?

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2025-11833, affected the Post SMTP plugin—not WordPress core. Wordfence reported that versions up to and including 3.6.0 exposed the plugin’s email-log display function without the necessary capability check. The issue received a CVSS score of 9.8, rated Critical by Wordfence Intelligence.

Wordfence said Post SMTP had more than 400,000 active installations when it reported the vulnerability in 2025. That figure describes installations, not confirmed successful compromises.

How could attackers take over a WordPress site?

Post SMTP keeps records of messages sent by a site. Because the vulnerable log display could be accessed without authentication, an attacker could retrieve a password-reset email sent to an administrator and use its link to set a new password. The attacker could then log in as that administrator. Wordfence also warned that administrator access could allow an attacker to upload malicious plugin or theme files or alter posts and pages.

Which Post SMTP versions are affected, and what fixes the flaw?

Post SMTP version Status Recommended action
3.6.0 and earlier Affected, according to the Wordfence advisories. Update immediately and investigate if the site was exposed.
3.6.1 Patched release identified in the advisories. Install this release or a newer supported version.

In WordPress, check Plugins → Installed Plugins to see whether Post SMTP is installed and which version is active. Update it from the plugin’s page or your normal update process. If the plugin is no longer needed, remove it rather than leaving an unused copy installed.

Was the flaw exploited?

Yes. Wordfence said it received the vulnerability report on October 11, 2025, and that the vendor released version 3.6.1 on October 29. Its initial report recorded more than 4,500 blocked attacks. In a follow-up, Wordfence reported more than 10,300 blocked exploit attempts and said mass exploitation appeared to begin around November 2; the initial report placed the start of exploitation around November 1. These are blocked attempts, not a count of confirmed hacked websites. The advisories do not establish an independently verified total of compromised sites.

How to check whether your site was compromised

Updating closes the vulnerability but does not remove an attacker who may already have gained access. If your site ran an affected version while exposed—especially during the November 2025 exploitation period—review available records and accounts before treating the update as a complete cleanup.

  • Review web-server and WordPress logs: Look for suspicious requests involving Post SMTP’s email-log endpoint, unexpected password-reset activity, and logins or account changes you cannot explain. Preserve relevant logs before they expire.
  • Audit users: Check for unfamiliar administrator accounts and unexpected changes to existing administrator credentials.
  • Inspect site changes: Review recently added or modified plugins and themes, as well as unexpected changes to posts, pages, or other site files.
  • Secure accounts: If compromise is suspected, reset administrator passwords and investigate for persistence before returning the site to normal use.
  • Get help if needed: If you cannot confidently review the logs, files, and accounts, use a qualified WordPress incident-response or maintenance professional.

Wordfence recommends monitoring and documents firewall and vulnerability-monitoring capabilities in its advisory. That information is not a comparative ranking of security providers; choose a response based on whether it can help with prompt patching, detection, log review, cleanup, and hands-on incident response.
