SanDisk says applicable SD and microSD cards resist up to 100mGy from airport X-rays; that rating is product-specific, not a guarantee for every card. For important photos, keep a backup and handle the card carefully—screening is only one of many possible causes of data loss.
What airport screening does to an SD card
SD cards store data in solid-state flash memory, so the old film-era concern about X-rays does not apply in the same way. SanDisk describes applicable SD and microSD products as “X-Ray Proof” and says they “Resist 100mGy from airport X-rays.” The figure is SanDisk’s published specification from 2022, and applies only to products carrying the relevant durability marking. Check the individual card packaging rather than assuming every SD card has that rating.
Walk-through metal detectors are not expected to harm card data either. The concern is sometimes framed as magnetism, but SanDisk’s 2022 product page lists magnetic-field resistance of 5,000 Gauss for applicable cards. As with the X-ray rating, this is not a universal specification for all cards.
What travelers have reported
A 2008 SitePoint forum discussion includes several people who said their cards survived repeated airport security crossings. The original poster, Shaun, reported eight crossings in one week with no SD-card data loss. These are personal experiences, not controlled tests. Another commenter said four CompactFlash cards became unreadable after a trip, but the discussion does not establish that airport screening caused the failure.

How to protect photos when you travel
- Back up before you leave. Keep another copy of important images on a separate device or storage destination; a card is not a backup.
- Use more than one card for irreplaceable work. Smaller-capacity cards can limit how much you lose if one card is misplaced or fails.
- Match the card to the camera. Confirm whether the device needs SD, SDHC, SDXC, or microSD, and choose a speed class that meets its recording requirements.
- Check the exact card’s markings. Durability features vary by product. SanDisk also lists up to 5 meters of drop resistance and 500g shock resistance for applicable products, but those figures should not be applied to cards without the corresponding product claims.
- Transfer with a compatible card reader. SanDisk recommends a reader rather than connecting the camera directly to a computer, describing the reader method as faster and less likely to corrupt data.
- Format in the camera. SanDisk recommends formatting the card in the camera that will use it; formatting on a computer can cause compatibility problems, corruption, or data loss.
- Avoid a microSD-to-SD adapter when possible. SanDisk warns that using a microSD adapter in a full-size SD camera slot can cause corruption or image loss.
If a card stops working after a flight
Timing alone does not prove the scanner caused a failure. Before concluding that airport equipment damaged the card, consider other common points of failure: an aging or defective card, incompatibility with the camera, a faulty adapter, file-system errors, or an interrupted or unreliable transfer. Avoid further writing to a card with missing files, since new data can complicate recovery, and use your backup if available.
SanDisk’s listed specifications provide a manufacturer claim for applicable products, not an independent test of every airport scanner or every SD-card brand. A universal X-ray exposure limit for all manufacturers is not established here.
