The LF Edge Sandbox is a free, self-service platform for trying LF Edge open-source projects on edge devices. Announced by The Linux Foundation on September 19, 2023, it is intended for proofs of concept, demonstrations, end-user experiences, and private-application testing—not as a claim of unlimited production capacity.

What the LF Edge Sandbox does

The Sandbox gives developers a central place to deploy applications from LF Edge projects rather than setting up and learning each project separately before they can begin testing. The LF Edge page describes its goal as helping developers learn about and test open-source projects so they can spend more time building solutions: LF Edge Sandbox.

It supports trying applications in bare-install, virtual-machine, and container formats, according to the 2023 launch announcement. The service is designed for evaluation and experimentation; public descriptions do not establish an uptime guarantee or promise that every application will work on every device.

Who provides it, and how it works

ZEDEDA provides the Sandbox as a software-as-a-service platform. It uses Project EVE’s EVE-OS, an open Linux-based operating system for distributed edge computing, to manage devices and orchestrate applications. LF Edge is the Linux Foundation umbrella and project ecosystem; ZEDEDA’s role is providing the service.

ELEGOO 3PCS ESP-32 Dev Boards, ESP-WROOM-32, USB-C, WiFi Bluetooth 4.2
  • Dual-Core Performance Up to 240 MHz: Run sensor processing, wireless communication, automation logic and connected-device tasks on a 32-bit dual-core ESP32 platform designed for responsive embedded and IoT projects
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
  • Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
  • USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
  • Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision

The basic workflow is to create an account, select an application from the preconfigured LF Edge Marketplace, connect a device, and deploy the application. The official page says applications can be ready within minutes. Actual setup depends on the device and deployment, so that timing is not a guarantee for every configuration.

How to get started

  1. Create an identity: Obtain a free Linux Foundation ID, then create an account for the LF Edge Sandbox through the official Sandbox page.
  2. Choose a device: Use your own EVE-compatible device or reserve a device through an LF Shared Community Lab. The public information does not provide a detailed compatibility matrix, so check that your hardware is supported before planning a deployment.
  3. Onboard the device: Follow the Sandbox onboarding flow to connect the device to the service, which uses EVE-OS for management and application orchestration.
  4. Select and deploy an application: Choose an available application from the preconfigured LF Edge Marketplace list and deploy it in a supported format. The Sandbox also supports testing private applications, according to its official page.

Do you need to buy edge hardware?

No dedicated hardware purchase is necessarily required. The Sandbox offers access to shared LF Community Lab devices, and a 2025 Linux Foundation update about EVE describes experimentation without dedicated hardware. Alternatively, users can bring their own EVE-compatible device. Shared-device access depends on availability; the public descriptions do not promise that a particular device will always be available.

What to verify before relying on it

  • Hardware fit: Confirm that your chosen device is EVE-compatible; a comprehensive public compatibility matrix is not specified in the cited Sandbox information.
  • Application availability: Check the current Marketplace list for the project and deployment format you need, especially if you intend to test a private application.
  • Lab access: Check reservation options and availability if you plan to use shared hardware rather than supply your own.
  • Service expectations: Public descriptions do not state an uptime guarantee, paid tiers, or unlimited capacity. Treat these as matters to confirm directly if they affect your evaluation or planned use.
