Amazon Show Mode is a free Alexa feature that gives certain Fire HD tablets a visual, hands-free experience similar to using a smart display. It is not available on every Fire tablet, and Amazon’s current compatibility list excludes some newer models. Check your tablet’s generation and software version before trying to enable Show Mode or buying the separate Charging Dock.
What Amazon Show Mode does
Amazon introduced Show Mode in 2018 as a more visual, hands-free Alexa experience for compatible Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 tablets. Instead of showing only a text response, the tablet displays full-screen visuals alongside Alexa’s voice responses. Amazon’s examples included trending news, weather, and camera feeds, as well as asking for recipes and timers, making video calls, and playing music or video. These are announced use cases, not a guarantee that every Alexa skill or connected device will behave just like it does on an Echo Show. Amazon’s Show Mode help page explains current setup and compatibility.
Show Mode is software, not a conversion of the tablet into Echo Show hardware. You can still take the tablet off its stand and use it as a regular tablet. Amazon described the launch feature as free; that did not mean compatible tablets or the optional dock were free. In its 2018 announcement, Amazon gave introductory dock prices of $34.99 for Fire HD 8 and $49.99 for Fire HD 10, with regular prices of $39.99 and $54.99, respectively. Those are historical launch prices, not current pricing. Amazon’s 2018 announcement attributed this statement to Kevin Keith, General Manager, Amazon Devices: “We’re now taking that Alexa experience one step further with Show Mode and the Show Mode Charging Dock.”
Which Fire tablets support Show Mode?
Amazon’s current support page specifies compatible generations and minimum software versions. A model name alone is not enough: two Fire HD 8 tablets from different generations may have different compatibility. The following models are listed as supported, provided they meet the stated software minimum. Amazon’s compatibility list is the authority if its information changes.
#1 Best Overall

- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
| Fire tablet | Minimum software version for Show Mode |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 8 (7th Generation) | 5.6.1.0 |
| Fire HD 10 (7th Generation) | 5.5.0.0 |
| Fire HD 8 (8th Generation) | 6.3.0.1 |
| Fire HD 10 (9th Generation) | 7.3.1.1 |
| Fire HD 8 (10th Generation) | 7.3.1.4 |
| Fire HD 10 (11th Generation) | 7.3.1.8 |
Amazon expressly lists these models as incompatible with Show Mode:
- Fire 7 (7th, 9th, and 12th generations)
- Fire HD 8 (12th generation)
- Fire Max 11 (13th generation)
- Fire HD 10 (13th generation)
Do not infer Show Mode support from Alexa hands-free support. Amazon’s separate Alexa hands-free compatibility page lists more Fire tablet generations, but that feature list does not establish Show Mode compatibility.

How to turn on Show Mode
On a compatible tablet, Amazon provides three ways to switch modes:
- From the home screen, swipe down and toggle Show Mode on.
- Use the Alexa app to turn on Show Mode.
- Say, “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.”
If the toggle or voice command does not work, first verify the tablet’s exact generation and that its software meets the minimum in the compatibility table. A tablet that supports Alexa hands-free may still be incompatible with Show Mode.

Which tablets fit the Show Mode Charging Dock?
The Charging Dock is a separate accessory, and its tablet fit list is narrower than Amazon’s general Show Mode list. Amazon says it supports only these models:
- Fire HD 8 (7th generation)
- Fire HD 10 (7th generation)
- Fire HD 8 (8th generation)
For the dock, Amazon specifies software version 5.6.3.0 or later for 7th-generation models, and 6.3.0.1 or later for the 8th-generation Fire HD 8. The dock holds the tablet at an adjustable viewing angle and charges it; Amazon said a supported tablet could automatically enter Show Mode when placed in the dock. Do not buy the dock based solely on a tablet being Show Mode-compatible. Amazon’s Show Mode Charging Dock help page covers compatibility and operation.

If the dock does not switch modes automatically
Amazon’s dock guidance identifies a few basic checks for automatic switching:
- Confirm Alexa is activated on the tablet.
- Check that the tablet’s contacts align with and connect to the dock’s magnetic contacts.
- Confirm the tablet model and software meet the dock requirements above.
The dock’s automatic switching settings and troubleshooting are covered in Amazon’s dock help instructions.
