Meta did describe a longer-term vision for AI characters with profile pictures and bios that could generate and share content on Facebook and Instagram. But the accounts that sparked backlash in January 2025 were reported as leftovers from a 2023 experiment—not a newly launched wave of AI users. Whether Meta later launched or materially advanced the broader vision remains unclear from the available reporting.
What Meta described—and what it did not announce
In late December 2024, Meta vice-president of product for generative AI Connor Hayes described a future in which AI characters might appear on the company’s platforms in a way that resembles ordinary accounts. As quoted by Ars Technica from Hayes’s Financial Times interview, he said: “They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform. That’s where we see all of this going.”
That was a longer-term direction, not evidence that Meta had just deployed a new system of AI accounts. Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney told 404 Media that “the recent Financial Times article was about our vision for AI characters existing on our platforms over time, not announcing any new product,” as quoted in Ars Technica’s account.
Why Facebook and Instagram users were upset
In early January 2025, users rediscovered AI-character profiles already present on Facebook and Instagram. Coverage described some posts as low-quality or socially awkward, and Ars Technica reported users sharing conversations they found troubling. Those reports document particular reactions and examples; they do not establish how broadly users opposed AI accounts through a representative poll.

A separate complaint was that users could not block some of the profiles. Meta said a bug was affecting blocking and that it was removing the accounts while addressing the issue. Sweeney said: “We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs and are removing those accounts to fix the issue,” according to Ars Technica.
The profiles were from an earlier test
Meta said the profiles at the center of the backlash came from a test launched at its Connect event in 2023. Sweeney described them as human-managed and part of an early AI-character experiment, rather than a new autonomous-account rollout. 404 Media reported that the remaining profiles had stopped posting around April 2024, although their chat features were still available when it published its January 3, 2025 story.

The distinction matters: the old test accounts were the immediate source of the January reaction, while Hayes’s interview described a possible future for AI characters. 404 Media reported that Meta said no new product had been released at that moment and that it was removing the older accounts.
How AI Studio fits in
AI Studio was a separate, creator-facing tool—not the same thing as deploying AI profiles across social feeds. In a December 2024 post, Meta said it had launched AI Studio in July 2024 and that hundreds of thousands of AIs had been created with it since launch. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited measures of active use or audience acceptance. Meta also stated a goal for AI Studio to become a leading destination for AI character creation in 2025; that was a target, not evidence that it was achieved. See Meta’s December 2024 account.

What Meta has said about labeling and safety
Meta’s policy statements offer context, but they do not prove that every AI profile or generated post would be clearly identified or safely managed. In its April 2024 labeling announcement, Meta said its “AI info” labels would apply to a wider range of content, including material identified through industry-shared signals or self-disclosure. It also said particularly high-risk content could receive a more prominent label and acknowledged that signal-based labels might not always match people’s expectations. The company reported that more than 23,000 respondents in 13 countries took part in its public-opinion research, and that 82% favored warning labels for AI-generated content depicting people saying things they did not say. Meta’s April 2024 description of its responsible-AI process cited evaluations, internal and external red-teaming, prompt and response filters, feedback tools, and user-facing notices that AI may be inaccurate or inappropriate. These were descriptions of general Meta AI and Llama practices at that time; they do not establish which protections applied to each experimental social profile, how effective they were, or whether they resolved concerns about transparency and blocking. What remains unclear
The available reporting establishes the late-2024 vision and the earlier test accounts that triggered the January 2025 backlash. It does not establish whether Meta subsequently relaunched or materially advanced the specific idea of AI profiles publishing alongside human accounts. That status should be treated as unresolved—not as proof that Meta abandoned the idea or put it into broad use.
If Meta does pursue account-like AI characters, useful questions for users include whether each profile identifies itself as AI and names its operator, whether it can be blocked and reported, whether it posts without being prompted, how labels show the origin of its content, and what protections apply to younger or otherwise vulnerable users. The reports document a blocking problem and Meta has described labeling policies, but they do not provide a controlled comparison showing how well different platforms handle these issues.
