Its technology maps application architecture and dependencies, then helps security teams prioritize vulnerabilities in the context of production use. CrowdStrike made Falcon Application Security Posture Management (ASPM) generally available as part of Falcon Cloud Security on May 6, 2024.
What Bionic adds to CrowdStrike’s security coverage
Cloud infrastructure and workload protection can show where systems run and help secure them. Bionic extends that view into the applications themselves: their services, databases, microservices, APIs, third-party components and data flows. CrowdStrike positioned the acquisition as a way to connect application architecture with cloud infrastructure and workloads in a code-to-runtime view. CrowdStrike’s acquisition announcement describes this broader application visibility across cloud providers and hybrid or on-premises deployments.
The distinction is useful: infrastructure-focused security can identify risks in cloud environments, while application security posture management adds context about how software components relate and which production applications may be exposed. Bionic’s contribution is that application context within CrowdStrike’s cloud security platform, rather than a replacement for infrastructure or workload protection.
How Bionic’s ASPM technology works
Maps applications without source-code access
Bionic uses an agentless approach to discover and deconstruct applications, mapping services and dependencies without requiring access to sensitive source code or integration with source-code repositories. CrowdStrike says the technology can integrate with CI/CD pipelines, giving development and security teams application visibility without inserting repository access as a prerequisite. Its coverage is described as spanning cloud, hybrid and on-premises environments. CrowdStrike’s announcement also identifies serverless environments, including Azure Functions and AWS Lambda, as part of the visibility it adds.

Prioritizes vulnerabilities in production context
Rather than treating every discovered vulnerability as equally urgent, Bionic is intended to help teams focus on vulnerabilities that are exploitable in production applications and matter to the business. CrowdStrike said in its September 2023 announcement that Bionic could “eliminate up to 95% of vulnerability noise.” That is a vendor-reported claim, not an independently verified benchmark, and the announcement does not establish it as a result every customer should expect. The claim appears in CrowdStrike’s acquisition announcement.
Why CrowdStrike acquired Bionic
The acquisition supports CrowdStrike’s effort to broaden its cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) beyond infrastructure and workloads to include application architecture and dependencies. The strategic value is a more connected view of risk across development and production: security teams can relate application components to the environments where they run, while developers can gain security context without source-code access being required by Bionic’s approach.

That combination may help address three common gaps: infrastructure-only visibility that lacks application context, security workflows that depend on repository integration, and vulnerability lists that do not distinguish production impact. Bionic’s design is intended to reduce those gaps; the acquisition announcement describes the intended capabilities, not a guarantee that every environment or workflow will be covered identically.

CrowdStrike’s SEC filing for the quarter ended July 31, 2024 describes Bionic as a privately held company whose ASPM platform analyzes application architecture and production dependencies to reduce security, data-privacy and operational risks. The filing records $96.4 million in cash consideration, net of $0.8 million in cash acquired, plus $0.5 million for the fair value of replacement equity awards attributable to pre-acquisition service. These are transaction-accounting figures disclosed in that filing, not a statement of the product’s current price or value. CrowdStrike’s SEC filing provides the transaction details.
