How did a dead woman talk at her own funeral?
Marina Smith, an 87-year-old woman in the UK who died in June 2022, had recorded answers to questions before her death. For her funeral, StoryFile used those recordings to create what was described as a “holographic conversational video experience.” A report by Futurism on August 19, 2022 says Smith was filmed with 20 cameras answering around 250 questions.
When mourners asked questions, the software matched them to relevant recorded answers and presented Smith on screen. StoryFile describes its process as recording hundreds of responses, indexing them into conversational pathways, and returning authentic video responses. The exchange could feel live, but the material being shown had been filmed in advance.
Was the AI making up answers?
The reporting describes a system that selected and played Smith’s recorded answers, not one that generated new statements in her voice or invented posthumous opinions. A response could seem newly revealing because a mourner had not heard it before, but it was still something Smith had said during the recorded interview.

Her son Stephen Smith said, “The extraordinary thing was that she answered their questions with new details and honesty.” That describes the family’s experience of hearing less-familiar recorded responses; it is not evidence that the software created new details.
Was it a hologram or a recording?
“Holographic” was the description used for the funeral experience. The available account explains it as a virtual video presentation, while StoryFile’s current description emphasizes recorded interviews and authentic video responses. It does not establish that Smith appeared as a physical, free-standing hologram. The key distinction is that the experience was interactive in how it selected clips, but the clips themselves were recordings.

How does an interactive memorial differ from a video archive?

It should not be mistaken for proof that a person can continue speaking or forming opinions after death.
Can you make an AI memorial for a relative?
StoryFile currently presents a “Legacies” offering for preserving a loved one’s memories for future questions, alongside its institutional work for museums and other organizations. Its site describes the platform as creating AI-powered, life-size conversations from interviews and directs prospective customers to book a demo: StoryFile.

That establishes that StoryFile markets a legacy-preservation service, but not that a standardized product is available to every household on identical terms. Public pricing and geographic availability are not stated on the referenced material. Families considering an interactive memorial should ask what recording and production are included, what happens when a question has no matching answer, who can access the recordings, and how the person’s consent and wishes are handled.

- Consent and boundaries: Decide while the person can participate whether they want an interactive memorial, what subjects should be excluded, and who may use it.
- Accuracy: Confirm whether the system plays only recorded answers or can generate new speech. Ask how it signals that a question has no suitable recording.
- Emotional impact: An interactive likeness may comfort some people and unsettle others. The funeral account included both a sense of closeness and reports of attendees being “a little creeped out.” In a related example, some described an experience with Ed Asner as “like having him in the room.”
- Access and preservation: Ask who controls the account and files, whether recordings can be downloaded, and what happens if the service changes or ends.
Stephen Smith said that “people feel emboldened when recording their data” and that mourners might get “a freer, truer version” of a loved one. That is one family’s interpretation of the experience, not a guarantee that every person will feel comforted or that a recorded interview captures the whole person.
