GitHub announced on June 8, 2022, that it would archive Atom and all projects under the Atom organization, with an official sunset date of December 15, 2022. That date has passed. A separate notice in January 2023 addressed certificate revocation affecting two Atom releases; it was not the reason for the original sunset.
When did GitHub shut down Atom?
GitHub announced the retirement on June 8, 2022, and set December 15, 2022, as the official sunset date. In its Sunsetting Atom announcement, GitHub Staff wrote: “We are archiving Atom and all projects under the Atom organization for an official sunset on December 15, 2022.” The announcement described an archive and sunset, not a shutdown scheduled for a future year.
What was Atom?
Atom was a free, open-source text editor from GitHub. When GitHub introduced it in 2014, it said the editor was released under the MIT license and highlighted its extensibility. GitHub later announced Atom 1.0 on June 25, 2015.
Those launch milestones provide context for the product’s history; they do not change its retirement date. GitHub’s original announcement and later security notice do not identify a currently endorsed successor editor.

Is Atom still available, and can existing users keep using it?
GitHub’s 2022 announcement says Atom and projects under its organization were to be archived. It does not establish ongoing support or provide a current recommendation for people seeking a replacement.
A separate GitHub notice published January 30, 2023, and updated February 2, concerned exposed, encrypted code-signing certificates. GitHub said Atom 1.63.0 and 1.63.1 would stop working after the certificates were revoked on February 2, 2023. For users who wanted to continue using Atom, GitHub advised downloading a previous version. That was guidance tied to the certificate issue, not a reversal of the sunset or an announcement that Atom would continue to receive support. Why did GitHub discontinue Atom?
GitHub’s sunset announcement is the primary source for the decision and its date, but the material cited here does not establish a specific detailed explanation that should be presented as the definitive cause. The later certificate-revocation notice describes a separate security matter; it should not be treated as the cause of the 2022 retirement.

If you still rely on Atom, treat it as retired software rather than a currently supported editor. GitHub’s 2023 advice was to download a previous version if you wished to keep using Atom after the specified releases stopped working. That notice does not establish that older versions remain safe, compatible with current systems, or supported today.

When choosing another editor, evaluate it against your own workflow rather than assuming GitHub designated a successor. Useful checks include whether it supports your operating system, how well it handles your languages and tools, whether your settings or packages can be migrated, its performance, its license, and whether it is actively maintained.
