If Gmail is blocked on a work, school, or other managed network, ask the network administrator to allow Google’s current Gmail hostnames and routes. Don’t rely on a fixed list of Gmail IP addresses: Google says its connection methods vary and the IP addresses associated with hostnames are not limited to fixed ranges. First identify whether the issue is browser Gmail, Outlook sync, a network restriction, or a Google Workspace account policy.

Identify what is blocking Gmail

“Behind a firewall” can describe different problems, and the right administrator depends on the cause. Use this quick comparison before requesting a change:

What you’re using or seeing Likely control layer Who to contact
Gmail in a browser fails only on a particular work or school network Network firewall, web filter, or proxy Network administrator
Gmail works in a browser, but Outlook does not sync through Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GWSMO) GWSMO-specific connectivity or proxy configuration IT administrator responsible for Outlook or GWSMO
Browser access works, but an app cannot access Gmail data Google Workspace app or OAuth access policy Google Workspace administrator
Gmail also fails on other networks, or reports a temporary service error Connectivity, browser/app, or a temporary Gmail issue Start with basic checks; contact the network host or service provider if needed

A firewall or proxy controls whether traffic can reach Gmail’s web hosts. Workspace app controls govern which apps can access an organization’s Google data; changing one does not automatically change the other. Google’s Gmail firewall guidance and Workspace app-access guidance address these separate situations.

What to ask IT to allow for Gmail in a browser

Give your network administrator Google’s current Gmail firewall hostname and route guidance rather than assembling a short list yourself. Google’s list includes these hostnames and patterns:

The asterisk is a wildcard: Google’s documentation says it can stand for any value except a dot. The list is intended for organizational firewall configuration, not as a guarantee that allowing these entries will fix every Gmail problem. Google notes that other Google services may share Gmail IP addresses, add-ons may need additional hosts, and restrictive firewall rules can affect dynamic email features.

Why a static Gmail IP allowlist is a poor substitute

Google says the way Gmail connects can depend on factors such as browser and network performance, and the IP addresses associated with its domain names do not always fit fixed ranges. A static IP list can therefore become incomplete or fail to cover the connection a user needs. Ask IT to use Google’s hostname guidance and check the current requirements rather than creating a permanent rule from an old IP list.

Check whether it is a network problem

Before requesting a firewall change, try Google’s basic checks for a Gmail “No connection” error. These can help distinguish a network restriction from a temporary or device-specific issue:

  1. Confirm that the device has an internet connection.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Turn Wi-Fi or mobile data off and back on.
  4. Try Gmail on a different network, if permitted.
  5. Close and reopen the browser or Gmail app.
  6. Sign out and back in if the browser or app allows it.

If Gmail works on another network but not the managed one, report that comparison to the network administrator. If the problem persists across networks, contact the service provider or Wi-Fi network host as appropriate. Google also describes “Temporary Error (502)” as a temporary Gmail availability issue and advises trying again shortly; that message alone does not establish that a firewall is blocking access. When the browser itself may be the issue

For browser messages such as “Oops” or “Bad Request,” Google’s troubleshooting advice includes checking browser extensions, trying private browsing, clearing cache and cookies, and reviewing advanced settings. If the same account works in another browser or app on the same network, tell IT that too: it is useful evidence that the issue may not be a blanket network block.

When Outlook sync or Workspace policy is involved

Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook

GWSMO is a separate client from Gmail in a browser. Google’s GWSMO troubleshooting guidance covers connectivity for Outlook processes, including port 443, port 80 for certificate revocation list downloads, GWSMO URLs, and a limitation that authenticated proxies are unsupported. Those details apply to GWSMO troubleshooting; they are not a complete firewall rule set for browser Gmail.

Workspace controls on apps that access Gmail data

If a third-party app is denied access to Gmail data in a managed account, ask the Workspace administrator to review the organization’s app-access or OAuth policy. Users generally cannot change those administrator controls themselves. This is different from allowing a browser to reach Gmail’s web hosts, so a network whitelist may not resolve an app-policy denial.

Keep Chrome Enterprise device rules separate

Google publishes a separate Chrome Enterprise hostname allowlist for managed ChromeOS and Chrome Enterprise Core devices, including scenarios involving TLS inspection or restrictions on external traffic. It covers device functions such as enrollment, sign-in, and captive portals. It is not a replacement for Google’s Gmail firewall hostname guidance.

The Chrome Enterprise page reports an update dated April 7, 2026 that added an OAuth account manager hostname. That date applies to the Chrome Enterprise documentation, not to the Gmail firewall list; administrators should consult the current guidance for the product and device they manage.

What not to do

  • Don’t try to bypass a workplace or school firewall with an unapproved VPN or proxy. Follow the organization’s network policy and request an authorized change.
  • Don’t send IT only mail.google.com and assume every Gmail feature uses that single hostname.
  • Don’t copy GWSMO ports and URLs into a browser-Gmail rule without confirming they apply to that client.
  • Don’t treat every temporary error or browser failure as proof of firewall filtering; compare networks and follow the relevant troubleshooting path.
