For safer everyday browsing, keep your browser updated, leave its built-in phishing and malware warnings on, and be selective about extensions. Then choose any stronger protection or privacy settings with their trade-offs in mind. Private browsing can limit what is saved on your device, but it does not make you invisible to websites or online services.
Start with the protections that matter most
Browser security is strongest when basic habits and built-in safeguards work together. A privacy setting cannot replace security updates, and a warning feature cannot make an untrusted download safe.
- Keep the browser updated. Enable automatic updates if available, and check the browser’s About or update page periodically so security fixes are installed.
- Keep malicious-site and download warnings enabled. These features can alert you to known phishing pages, malware, or risky downloads. Do not casually bypass a clear warning.
- Be cautious with downloads. Avoid opening files from sources you do not trust, even if the download completes without a warning.
- Review extensions. Install only those you need from a trusted store or publisher, consider the permissions they request, and remove extensions you no longer use. Each extension adds software to the browser and may have access to browser data.
- Protect accounts too. Use unique passwords for different accounts; a password manager can help create and manage them. This reduces password reuse risk, but does not replace browser updates or careful phishing judgment.
What Chrome Safe Browsing protection levels do
Chrome offers Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing. The choice is a trade-off between how proactively Chrome checks for threats and how much browsing-related information is shared with Google. The details below describe Google’s account of its own feature, not an independent privacy audit.

To review the setting, open Chrome’s Settings → Privacy and security → Security, then choose the Safe Browsing level shown in your version. Labels and availability may vary by platform or version. If you prefer to share less information with Google, Standard is the less data-intensive option described above; Enhanced prioritizes more proactive checks.
How Edge security and privacy controls differ
Microsoft Edge has separate controls for protection against threats, tracking, and DNS privacy. They address different risks and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Enhanced security mode
Enhanced security mode applies more conservative browser protections to unfamiliar sites in Balanced mode, while Strict applies them to all sites by default. Microsoft warns that Strict may affect normal website tasks. If a site does not work properly, consider a per-site adjustment rather than turning off protections globally. Tracking prevention
Tracking prevention has Basic, Balanced, and Strict levels. It concerns tracking by websites and is distinct from enhanced security mode’s protections against certain security threats. Microsoft describes the available levels and settings in Trackers and privacy in Microsoft Edge.

Secure DNS
Secure DNS encrypts DNS queries, which are used to look up website addresses. It is a separate privacy control, not a replacement for threat warnings, updates, or cautious downloads. Microsoft explains the feature in Microsoft Edge privacy and security settings.
Is private or incognito browsing private?
Private browsing mainly limits what the browser saves locally for that session, such as browsing history. It does not stop websites or the services they use from collecting information about activity. It also does not replace the browser’s security protections. Use a private window when you want to reduce traces left in the browser on your device, not as a way to become anonymous online.

Are browser extensions safe?
Some extensions are useful, but each is additional software with permissions that may expose browsing information or alter browser behavior. Choose extensions only when you have a clear need, use a trusted store or publisher, and read the requested permissions before installing. Remove anything you no longer use. Google recommends removing apps and extensions you do not need in its Google Account security guidance; Microsoft recommends reputable extensions from its add-ons store in its Edge extension guidance.
What to do if a protection setting breaks a website
- Identify the control involved. A problem may be caused by enhanced security mode, tracking prevention, or another privacy setting; these controls do different things.
- Try a per-site adjustment where supported. In Edge, Microsoft documents site-specific handling for enhanced security mode. Use this only for the affected site rather than lowering protection everywhere.
- Reassess the trade-off. If the site is important and the setting blocks a necessary task, decide whether a limited exception is acceptable. Avoid ignoring malware or phishing warnings just to make a page load.
How to compare browser security choices
There is no established overall browser-security winner in the cited material. A useful comparison looks at the factors that affect your own use:
