In March 2005, BetaNews reported that Yahoo planned to increase storage for free webmail accounts to 1GB. The increase was expected to begin late in April and roll out to all users over as many as two weeks; the report did not say that every account changed on one announcement-day date. BetaNews’ March 23, 2005 report is the contemporaneous account behind the headline.
What Yahoo announced—and when users were expected to see it
BetaNews described the change as a plan attributed to Yahoo: free accounts would receive 1GB of storage. The reported rollout was due to start late the following month, in April 2005, and Yahoo expected it could take up to two weeks to reach all users. That is a staged rollout window, not a single date on which all accounts were confirmed to have changed.
The BetaNews report does not name a Yahoo spokesperson or provide a direct quotation from an official Yahoo document. Its details should therefore be understood as the outlet’s report of Yahoo’s plan, not as a verbatim executive statement.
How the reported capacities changed from 2004 to 2005
Contemporary coverage shows Yahoo’s free-mail quota rising quickly in the period before the 1GB plan. The figures below are service-capacity amounts reported by news outlets at the time, not results from an independent market study.

|---|---|---|
| Yahoo, before its 2004 increase | 4MB | Neowin reported this as the earlier free-account limit. Neowin, May 2004. |
| Yahoo, planned 2004 increase | 100MB | Neowin reported a plan to raise free storage to 100MB. The same report described “virtually unlimited storage” for paid users; that paid offer is distinct from the free quota. |
| Yahoo and MSN, June 2004 | 250MB | Ars Technica reported that both services were offering 250MB free accounts after Yahoo’s earlier increase. Ars Technica, June 2004. |
| Gmail, reported in 2005 | 1GB | BetaNews identified Gmail’s reported 1GB capacity as the competitive context for Yahoo’s planned free-account increase. BetaNews, March 2005. |
| Yahoo, planned 2005 increase | 1GB | BetaNews reported a planned free-account quota increase, expected to begin late in April 2005 and take up to two weeks to roll out. |
Why the 1GB figure mattered then
In the reports’ chronology, Gmail’s 1GB offer formed the competitive backdrop to Yahoo’s proposal. Yahoo’s earlier increases had moved its free quota from 4MB to 100MB and then, in June 2004 coverage, to 250MB. The 2005 plan would put Yahoo’s free offer at the same reported capacity as Gmail’s. These figures explain the historical comparison; they do not measure the email market as a whole or indicate which service is preferable today.
