Windows 10 version 21H1, released May 18, 2021, listed three groups of deprecations: BitLocker 2 Go Reader and related removable-drive items, personalization roaming, and the WMIC command-line utility. Microsoft’s removed-features table also lists legacy Microsoft Edge in the 21H1 column. Windows To Go was removed earlier, not in 21H1. These distinctions matter: deprecated means a feature may be removed later, not that it was already taken out of 21H1.
What does “removed” versus “deprecated” mean?
Microsoft describes deprecation as the point when a feature is no longer actively developed and may be removed in a future release. A removed feature has been taken out of the product. So a 21H1 deprecation notice is a warning about future availability, not proof that the feature stopped working when the update arrived. Microsoft explains its deprecated-features terminology.
Features deprecated in Windows 10 21H1
| Feature or item | Status and scope | Replacement or practical impact |
|---|---|---|
| BitLocker 2 Go Reader and related items | Deprecated. The entry covers the BitLocker 2 Go Reader app (bitlockertogo.exe and associated files), the ADMX policy “Allow access to BitLocker-protected removable data drives from earlier versions of Windows,” the manage-bde -DiscoveryVolumeType (-dv) parameter, and the c:windowsBitLockerDiscoveryVolumeContents catalog file. |
Microsoft’s entry does not name a replacement. The deprecation concerns this reader and its associated policy, command parameter, and catalog; it is not a statement that BitLocker as a whole was deprecated. |
| Personalization roaming | Deprecated. Synchronization of personalization settings, including wallpaper, slideshow, accent colors, and lock-screen images, was no longer being developed. | Microsoft’s entry does not specify a replacement. It warned that roaming settings could be removed in a future release; it did not say that personalization settings themselves were removed from Windows 21H1. |
| WMIC | Deprecated. This applies to the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) utility, not to WMI itself. | Microsoft says WMIC is superseded by Windows PowerShell for WMI. Administrators using WMIC scripts should plan to move those management tasks to PowerShell; WMI remains unaffected by this deprecation entry. |
For the full scope of these entries, see Microsoft’s deprecated-features list.
What the WMIC notice does—and does not—cover
The notice is about the command-line management utility only. It does not announce the removal of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). The distinction matters for administrators: WMIC-based commands or scripts are the migration concern, while this notice does not say that WMI stops working.

What Microsoft lists as removed in 21H1
Legacy Microsoft Edge
Microsoft’s removed-features table lists legacy Microsoft Edge in the Windows 10 21H1 column, noting that support ended on March 9, 2021. This is the legacy Edge browser, not a general statement that every Microsoft browser was removed. See Microsoft’s removed-features list.
What was not newly removed in 21H1
- Windows To Go: Microsoft attributes its removal to Windows 10 version 2004 and later, not specifically to 21H1.
- Taskbar settings roaming: Microsoft lists this among earlier removals, not as a new 21H1 removal.
These features may appear in Microsoft’s broader removed-features history, but their presence there does not make them changes introduced by the May 2021 Update. Check the release attribution in Microsoft’s table.

Why 21H1 was a small update—and why support status matters
Microsoft announced Windows 10 21H1 on May 18, 2021 as a scoped update focused on security, remote access, quality, and a fast update experience. Versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1 shared the same system-file core; on eligible systems, an enablement package activated dormant 21H1 features. That shared foundation does not change the release attribution of removals listed for earlier versions. See Microsoft’s 21H1 release announcement and Microsoft’s enablement-package information.
Windows 10 21H1 reached end of servicing on December 13, 2022. Installations still running 21H1 no longer receive security updates, so upgrading to a supported Windows release should be part of any current maintenance plan.
