W3Schools says its certificates are recognised worldwide; the available evidence does not establish universal acceptance, independent accreditation, or a guaranteed hiring advantage. Treat a certificate as supporting evidence of learning, alongside practical work—not as a degree, licence, or substitute for a portfolio.
What does “recognised” mean for a W3Schools certificate?
Recognition can mean different things. It is useful to separate whether a certificate is genuine, what W3Schools says about it, and whether an outside organisation gives it weight.
- Verifiable: W3Schools provides a unique certificate link or QR code that others can use to check the record. Its verification service shows certificate records at verify.w3schools.com.
- Recognised by the provider: W3Schools Campus says its certificates are recognised worldwide, and W3Schools Academy says its certificates are valued by schools looking to certify students. These are W3Schools’ own descriptions, not independent confirmation of acceptance by all schools or employers.
- Accepted by an employer, school, or regulator: That depends on the organisation and its requirements. No independent employer-acceptance rate, accreditation decision, or standards-body endorsement is established by the available evidence.
So, a certificate can be authentic and shareable without being an accredited academic qualification or carrying the same weight everywhere.
Are W3Schools certificates worth putting on a resume?
They can be worth listing if the assessment is relevant to the role and you describe it accurately. A certificate can document that you completed a W3Schools exam; it is stronger when accompanied by projects that let a hiring manager judge what you can actually build.
#1 Best Overall
- List the specific W3Schools certificate and the relevant skill area.
- Link to the verifiable certificate record where practical.
- Pair it with a portfolio project, code sample, or other evidence of applied skills.
- Do not describe it as a degree, professional licence, or independently accredited credential unless you have separate evidence for that claim.
W3Schools itself says its certificates are not intended to replace formal higher education and cannot guarantee a job. It recommends building a portfolio so employers can assess skills and commitment.
What do the exams involve?
W3Schools Academy describes a standard certification exam as 70 questions in 70 minutes, with up to three attempts. W3Schools Support also says an exam can be taken with up to three attempts. These details describe the provider’s exam offering; they do not, by themselves, establish how a particular employer will evaluate the certificate.
After passing, the certificate is issued in the learner’s name and can be shared. W3Schools says its unique link or QR code can be used to check authenticity.
What was the original SitePoint discussion about?
The SitePoint thread titled “Get Started” was published on 27 July 2004. The question asked whether W3Schools online exams were “actually recognised as good certificates” and mentioned a then-price of $59 (about £40). That price is historical and should not be treated as current.

One participant, MikeMontgomery, said his company used W3Schools HTML/XHTML/CSS exams internally for new employees, especially entry-level staff. He also wrote, “I don’t think the W3Schools exams hold any weight in the industry as a whole,” and argued that a good portfolio was more valuable than a couple of certifications. These comments are one person’s dated employer anecdote and opinion, not a representative measure of current industry practice.

Consider the certificate’s value in the context where you plan to use it, rather than relying on a general claim of recognition.
Quick Recap
- Check the target employer or school: Ask whether it values this specific certificate if it would affect your decision.
- Look at the assessment: Consider the exam’s scope and conditions, and whether they test skills relevant to your goal.
- Verify the credential: Confirm that a recipient can access the W3Schools certificate record using its link or QR code.
- Weigh it against practical evidence: A project or portfolio gives reviewers something concrete to evaluate alongside the exam result.
- Keep the credential’s limits in view: It is not a replacement for formal higher education, and W3Schools does not promise that it will lead to a job.
