Preact is the closest lightweight alternative to React when you want to preserve React-like APIs and test compatibility with existing code. For other projects, “lightweight” may mean less JavaScript before a page becomes interactive, a different authoring model, or better performance on a particular workload—not simply a smaller framework package. Compare candidates in the context of your application rather than treating any one as universally smallest or fastest.

What “lightweight” means for a React alternative

A framework’s advertised library size is not the same as the compressed JavaScript for a finished application. The application bundle also reflects its features, dependencies, routing, and build configuration. Startup behavior is another measure: how much JavaScript must download or execute before users can interact. Update performance is separate again and depends on the interaction being measured.

Keep these measures distinct when comparing options. A small runtime does not automatically produce the smallest application, and a result on one benchmark task does not establish which framework will be fastest for your interface.

How the main alternatives differ

Option Why to consider it What to verify
Preact Its official site describes it as a small React alternative and documents preact/compat for compatibility. Preact lists its library size as approximately 3 kB on its homepage; its project goals give an approximate 3.5 kB figure and say the project aims to be largely compatible with the React API. These are Preact’s own approximate library-size descriptions, not measurements of a complete application. Check whether your React code and every required third-party library work with the compatibility layer.
Qwik Qwik emphasizes resumability: its FAQ explains that an app need not bootstrap all its state before handling interaction. Its overview advertises about 1 kB of JavaScript to boot. The boot figure is Qwik’s claim, not a total-bundle comparison or an independently verified head-to-head measurement. Qwik also uses JSX, but its FAQ clarifies that JSX is syntax and does not mean the framework is React.
Svelte, Solid, Vue, Inferno, and htmx These are also named as React alternatives in the SitePoint article that originally framed this topic. The available evidence does not establish current versions, bundle sizes, React compatibility, or performance for these projects. Consult each project’s current official documentation and test its fit for your application rather than assuming a shared implementation model.

Which option fits your project?

Choose Preact when React familiarity and compatibility matter

Preact is the most direct first candidate if your team wants a small library and would like to retain much of its React knowledge or code. Its compatibility layer is a migration aid, not a guarantee that every React application or library will work unchanged. Make a list of the app’s dependencies and test the integrations that are essential to it.

Consider Qwik when startup behavior is a central concern

Qwik is worth evaluating when the amount of JavaScript needed before interaction is a key project requirement. Resumability is a different startup approach from simply choosing a small runtime. Assess it with representative pages and workflows, and keep Qwik’s vendor-reported boot figure separate from your own production build measurements.

Evaluate the other candidates against their current documentation

Svelte, Solid, Vue, Inferno, and htmx may be relevant candidates, but a name on an alternatives list is not enough to establish a technical fit. Compare the current authoring model, reactivity approach, required integrations, and migration path for the specific project. Favor the model your team can maintain over an unsupported claim that one option is inherently lighter.

Compare candidates with a representative application

A useful trial is a small but realistic slice of the product, not an empty starter app. Include the routing, data handling, and dependencies the production interface actually needs. Use the same scope and production build conditions for each candidate.

  1. Check migration fit. Identify which existing React components can be retained, rewritten, or replaced, and test required libraries—especially if evaluating Preact’s compatibility layer.
  2. Build the same representative screen. Include production-relevant dependencies rather than comparing framework packages in isolation.
  3. Measure production output. Compare compressed JavaScript for the built application, noting what features and dependencies are included in each build.
  4. Assess startup behavior. Observe the JavaScript users must download and execute before the interactions your page needs become available.
  5. Test real interactions. Measure the app’s costly or frequent interactions under comparable conditions. Treat community benchmarks as evidence about their specific apps and setup, not a universal ranking.
  6. Account for team and ecosystem cost. Consider debugging, library availability, maintenance, hiring, and the effort of migrating and supporting the chosen framework.

Why a single “fastest” ranking is misleading

A surfaced community comparison, “React vs Vue vs Svelte vs Solid vs Preact vs Lit — real-world comparison”, tests six sample apps and reports different results across tasks. Those results describe the particular implementations and test setup; they do not predict every application’s performance. No broad independent statistical study established here supports a universal ranking of lightweight React alternatives.

Use benchmark results to identify questions for your own trial, not as a substitute for it. Compare equivalent application behavior, production dependencies, and relevant interactions before drawing conclusions.
