Slackel 7.7.2 Openbox is a live Linux distribution you can try from installation media, but it is an older release—not a well-supported, evidence-based recommendation as a general Windows 11 replacement. The project announced Openbox 8.0 in September 2025. If you are considering Slackel 7.7.2 specifically, check the current Openbox downloads first, then test the live system and confirm that your hardware and essential apps meet your needs before installing.
What Slackel 7.7.2 Openbox includes
Slackel announced version 7.7.2 on January 6, 2024. The project described it as based on Slackware, compatible with Slackware, and incorporating tools from Salix. The release included Linux kernel 6.1.62 and updates from Slackware Current available at the time of publication; those details do not establish its present-day maintenance or security status. Slackel’s 7.7.2 announcement lists both 32-bit and 64-bit live images and says the 64-bit ISO supports UEFI boot.
The release announcement names Flatpak and these included software versions: Firefox 118.0.2, Thunderbird 115.3.2, LibreOffice 7.6.2, GIMP 2.10.34, SMPlayer 23.6.0 and OpenJRE 19.0.2.u7, along with MPlayer, FileZilla, Pidgin, Transmission and Slackel administration tools. These are the versions named in the January 2024 announcement, not a guarantee that they are current or supported today.

Is Slackel 7.7.2 the current Openbox release?
No. Slackel announced Openbox 8.0 on September 11, 2025, with kernel 6.12.39, and its Openbox files directory lists 8.0 images and packages. The reviewed project pages do not identify a later Openbox release. Slackel’s MATE 9.0 announcement from June 2026 concerns a different desktop edition, so it is not evidence of an Openbox 9 release. Before downloading, compare the available Openbox images and release notes on the project’s release archive and Openbox downloads page.
The project pages cited here do not establish a full support policy or a security-maintenance timeline for 7.7.2. Its release date and listed software versions are reasons to verify maintenance status rather than assume this older image is suitable for everyday use.

Can you try Slackel from a USB stick before installing?
Yes. Slackel describes its Openbox images as live media that can also be used for installation. The 7.7.2 announcement points users to the release README for instructions on transferring an ISO to media and to the Slackel Startup Guide for installation and setup. Follow those project instructions rather than relying on a generic procedure: the announcement does not give a complete set of steps for every computer. A USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity is a practical suggestion for an ISO around 2.7 GB, not a published minimum or a guarantee that every drive will work.
Use the live session to check whether the selected image boots and whether the devices and applications you need behave as expected. A successful test on one computer does not establish compatibility with every PC or peripheral. Slackel also documents installation to external storage, including USB sticks and USB SSDs; consult the project’s 7.7.2 image page and its linked installation guidance before making changes to a drive.

What to check before choosing Slackel instead of Windows 11
The available release information is not a direct Windows 11 comparison. It does not establish Windows hardware requirements, relative speed or security, privacy differences, or which system is better for a particular person. The 32-bit Slackel image also does not prove compatibility with a modern PC or make it a substitute for the requirements of a current operating system.
- Release and maintenance: Decide whether you want to evaluate 7.7.2 or a later Openbox image, and verify the project’s current release information and maintenance details.
- Boot and hardware: Confirm that your computer can boot the image architecture and firmware mode you select. The 7.7.2 announcement specifically says its 64-bit image supports UEFI; it does not promise support for every machine or device.
- Applications: List the software you rely on, then verify support for Slackel rather than assuming that an application available on Linux supports this distribution.
- Installation and upkeep: Read Slackel’s installation and setup guidance and consider whether you are comfortable managing a Linux system. Back up important files before installing or changing partitions.
If you depend on Slack
Slack’s published Linux desktop requirements list Ubuntu LTS 22.04 or above and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 or above; they do not list Slackel. That wording does not establish that Slack cannot run on Slackel, but it means Slackel is not among the Linux distributions named in those requirements. Slack says it revises system requirements twice a year, in May and November, so check its current desktop requirements and support lifecycle before making Slack a deciding factor. Slack also notes that supported app versions may continue working after an operating system loses support, but will not receive app updates.

Which option makes sense?
| Option | What the available information establishes | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Slackel 7.7.2 Openbox | Announced in January 2024; 32-bit and 64-bit live images; the announcement says 64-bit supports UEFI. | Current maintenance, image availability, hardware and peripheral compatibility, and support for your required applications. |
| Slackel Openbox 8.0 | Announced in September 2025 with kernel 6.12.39; 32-bit and 64-bit images appear in the project’s Openbox files. | Current release notes, maintenance, and compatibility with your machine and software. |
| Keep Windows 11 | The Slackel release sources do not establish Windows 11 requirements or compare its security, speed, or application compatibility with Slackel. | Use authoritative Windows information and check whether your required hardware and applications are supported. |
Slackel 7.7.2 is best treated as an older live Linux release to evaluate, not as a proven drop-in replacement for Windows 11. If you want Slackel, start by checking the current Openbox download and testing the live image before committing an installation.
