The awkward detail in the Department of Homeland Security’s drone-program video is that it promotes “American Air Superiority” while showing an officer operating a controller identified as DJI, a Chinese drone maker. That is evidence of DJI equipment in the footage—not, by itself, proof of a specific aircraft, contract or current DHS deployment.
What appears in the DHS video?
In a 40-second promotional clip, DHS pairs drone footage and uplifting music with phrases including “innovation in action” and “American Air Superiority.” The post opens with “SAFEGUARDING AMERICAN AIRSPACE” and says the department has launched “a Program Executive Office to rapidly procure and deploy drone and counter drone technology.”
Joe Wilkins’s January 15, 2026, report for Futurism says drone researcher Faine Greenwood first spotted the DJI controller in the footage. DJI is headquartered in Shenzhen, China.
Does the controller prove DHS was flying a DJI drone?
It makes that a reasonable inference, but not a confirmed identification. Wilkins’s report explains that DJI uses closed-source communication protocols and that its equipment is not cross-compatible with other drone brands. On that basis, the article infers the officer was piloting a DJI-made aircraft.

- Engineered for DJI O4 video transmission with an integrated antenna design, it is lighter than its predecessor and boasts a longer operating time. The control sticks are extended by 2 mm, catering to single and dual-fingered control.
- In addition to Normal and Sport modes, the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 offers Manual mode, better suited for advanced players to practice and master more sophisticated skills.
- For a tailored control stick feel, it is recommended to use the included screwdriver for adjustments. For more details, check the manual or tutorial videos.
- DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 is compatible with a variety of simulators including Liftoff, Uncrashed, DCL, and The Drone Racing League.
- DJI Neo, DJI Avata 2, DJI O3 Air Unit, DJI O4 Air Unit Pro, DJI O4 Air Unit
The visible controller is the direct evidence; the aircraft identification is an inference from how the equipment works. The report does not name a drone model, establish when the footage was recorded, or independently verify that the scene depicts an operational deployment.
Why does the DJI detail clash with the message?
The video presents the initiative as a push for American air superiority, while the controller shown is from a Chinese company. That contrast is the source of the embarrassment: the promotional imagery appears at odds with the national-security framing, even though the clip alone does not establish what DHS bought or uses across its operations.

What does the report say about restrictions on Chinese drones?
Wilkins places the clip against a changing policy backdrop. In his account, restrictions imposed in December covered Chinese-made drones, including DJI; after a Pentagon recommendation, some brands received a temporary easing, while DJI remained prohibited. The report does not supply enough detail to treat that summary as a complete account of every rule, exception, agency or use case. It also does not establish a general ban on consumers owning or buying DJI products.

What the video does—and does not—establish
- Shown: a DHS promotional clip includes an officer using a controller identified as DJI.
- Inferred by the report: the officer was piloting a DJI drone, based on the equipment’s communications system and lack of cross-brand compatibility.
- Not established: the aircraft’s exact model, a procurement contract number, when the footage was recorded, or whether it documents an independently verified operational deployment.
